The Perfect Find (2023)

Someone recommended this movie to me. I’m not a fan of Black American movies and I have no idea why. Especially Tyler Perry movies. I don’t really like them but I will admit that I get captivated enough by some to watch till the end. Like Acrimony and Till Death Do Us Part. So, when this was recommended, I was skeptical but went on ahead to see it anyway.

The Perfect Find is about 40-year-old Jenna who makes a comeback after her dramatic and very public fall from grace with her ex. While trying to climb back to the top, she meets and falls for the charming Eric, who is not only younger but also the son to her nemesis/boss in the industry. It had a very intriguing plot with the popular age-gap trope. Yet, as I watched it, it felt way too familiar with even the name. I would later realise that it was based on a book that I had read which was the reason why it felt so familiar. See, this is one of the reasons I don’t watch movies from books I have read. They are always disappointing for some reason.

Firstly, I think the movie was good. In a purely aesthetic, cinematic sort of way. Especially since it was dealing with fashion and all, it was pleasing to the eyes. The actors too. Especially Eric. First time seeing him and I thought he was a hot thang but that was as far as it went for me.

The acting felt forced, almost like the actors struggled with perfectly understanding the characters and creating the balance needed. It also felt rushed and there were scenes in particular that made me cringe. The humour was cool though and between the banter and embarrassment, I found myself blushing once or twice.

One thing the person who recommended said about it rang true. It was a different feel and fresh, if you looked at it from a certain angle. Maybe I am just used to reading and watching mature characters but Erics’ reaction toward the end just sealed the deal of my dislike. I don’t remember if that was how the book went too since it had been so long and if it is, then I must have been so angry when I read that part.

I rate this a 5.5/10. It might be cool for a slow weekend followed by a wild bout of swords to wash your brain. Yet, it could be Perfect for someone else. Just not me.

Why did Eric make you dislike the movie.
At first I was very convinced to watch the film but now I am not.

Well, I did like this film. Quite cliche and brings back not-so-memorable memories, but it was a moderately good watch. Apt review!
