Friends With Benefits

Many of you may have already recognized this film just from the title, so I’m glad to share it with you all today. On today’s love-filled episode, we have another one for you today, and I hope it’s something you once found as much delight in as I did.

Friends With Benefits (2011)

Jamie (Mila Kunis) is a New York-based hunter who recruits Dylan (Justin Timberlake), a talented Los Angeles art director for a GQ job. They immediately take to each other, becoming close friends and bonding over their similar experiences and frustrations with relationships. Now love cynics, they agree on the possibility of keeping emotions away from physical intimacy and decide to add that to their friendship. As they navigate their finely plotted arrangement, they begin spending more time together beyond their original agreement.

Things get complicated when Jamie introduces Dylan to her family, and he, in turn, takes her to visit his hometown in California. During the trip, she learns more about his struggles, particularly his relationship with his father, which shifts her perspective on him. Meanwhile, their growing attachment starts to challenge their initial “no strings attached” deal, leading to unexpected tensions and self-reflection.

From the title, you would already guess how the movie would go, and how it would end. But at the time this movie was created, that trope hadn’t fully been explored. The whole friends pretending that intimacy without emotions attached would work, trope. I think at the time it was quite lovely, and you couldn’t fully predict what would happen, at least not the plot sequence and all of that. Now, it’s all blown out of proportion, and I doubt you would see this without rolling your eyes. Unless you’re the type who finds tropes like this tolerable.

I’ve always liked Mila Kunis, especially because for a long time, she reminded me of Emma Stone whose acting and sense of humour I quite enjoy. And I’d never seen Justin Timberlake act before then, so it was all rather refreshing. They both had lovely chemistry. Or maybe I’m the one beguiled by Mila Kunis’ eyes. Coming to think of it, I’ve never seen friends with benefits pulled off successfully and long-term without the whole emotional bits clashing, but maybe I haven’t looked hard.

This was a refreshing rewatch, seeing as it’s been nearly 15 years since this film was released. And a good step into the world of romance that once was somewhat ideal, and without all the muck existing now. Anyway, hopefully, you enjoy this bit if you haven’t seen it or relive the experience if you have.
