On yet another nostalgic path, I’m bringing something too you all today. It is a film, any watcher or lover of action flicks may recognize, and hopefully, we have fond memories of this particular film, or at least candid thoughts on it.
Hitman (2007)
Released on November 21st, 2007, the movie begins with a group of boys whose heads are shaved clean and tattoos of bar codes dawn at the back of their heads. In this heavily guarded facility, these boys are trained in weapons and combat in order to become professional hitmen performing field operations around the globe. In the present day, an Interpol agent meets our male lead, Agent 47, and three months prior to their discussion, Agent 47 is given a task by his Organization to publicly kill the Russian President, Mikhail Belicoff. But after Agent 47 successfully completes his mission, things begin to go awry as he realizes that there is something not quite right about the missions the Organization has been giving him.
In a battle of wit, strength, capability and brawn, Agent 47 strives to survive the assassination attempts against him. With the unsuspecting mistress of Belicoff in tow, the form a sort of camaraderie while going to different parts and intercepting all attempts by his own agency. Just how far can he go till he trips on his own feet.
One thing about watching action movies as a kid is that for a little time afterwards, you imagine yourself to be some form of detective or hero, taking down bad guys and stuff. And this is exactly how I felt watching this. Jumping on chairs and tables and almost even the balcony till my mom yelled at me to cease my foolish antics immediately, it was certainly a fun time for me.
I do love how Timothy Olyphant interpreted his role in this. It made me want to find out what other films he is in. The movie was action packed from start to finish and the numerous shoot-outs and fight scenes were Oscar-worthy. The fight in the railway maintenance shed was particularly inventive. Olyphant was cool, calm and full of panache throughout and I loved his role as the emotionless assassin. That’s until he met Nika, and even the 30 seconds tops nudity displayed wasn’t a sore sight. He was also supported by an excellent cast, and their striking medley of accents added a lot of zest to the movie. The whole barcode on their shaved heads was never interpreted, though, and I’d have loved to understand it. But, oh well.
Although this movie was a Box Office success, I’ve seen a lot of negative reviews about it. I also found out that it was based off of the video game series with the same name, so I’m guessing these negative criticisms are coming from those who have played the game and maybe thought that the movie was not in line with how the series was. I still think it was a great film, though and I kind of prefer it to the Hitman Agent 47 of 2015. But that’s just me. What do you think? Have you seen Hitman before?
