Movie Review: Merlin – A Legendary Tale of Magic and Destiny

in CineTV3 days ago

Growing up and as a Nigerian I am, one of the things that I really love so much is watching movies. In fact in my early childhood days, I prefer watching movies much more than playing games. Talking also about my favourite genre of movies, I will say there is none in particular. I prefer movies that are action based, full of suspense and with magic. If there is a movie that I watch which I love the high performance of magic in that movie and even till now, I keep watching over and over again, it will certainly be Merlin.

Virtually every Nigerian will have watched Merlin. A movie that runs from 2008 to 2012 is that movie that have every elements to make you glued to your screen every season. I have always hear about stories of African Gods and Magicians but I will say Merlin helps to give me the true picture to my imagination at a very young age. It was a movie that centered around two major characters which are King Arthur and Merlin itself which is the main cast for the movie.

The movie been acted in a city called Camelot. The major cast of the movie which is Merlin(Colin Morgan) was given the task to deliver a city and protect the prince of the city of Camelot called Prince Arthur(Bradley James). Merlin who lived with a old age but wise and magician Gaius. The destiny of Merlin was simple, He must protect Prince Arthur with all his life so that Prince Arthur can become the king of his city as predestined.

But like we all know, for every movie that have the Protagonist must also have Antagonist. For the movie, the protagonist was Merlin and the Antagonist was Queen Morgana(Katie McGrath). One of the things that make the movie to actually stand out is the fact that seeing someone with less influence like Merlin rising up to become the major protagonist is something every Nigerian want in a movie I inclusive. I generally always love the actor coming from a humble background and that is what Merlin presented.

Not only that, I love the sense of magic been played in the movie. There was utmost balance of magic used. I have watched different kinds of movies who just acted with magic but you can say the magic they perform were actually very unrealistic. But not in merlin, the magic were realistic and not only that but it was also been able give us the true meaning and purpose of magic. While watching merlin, I discovered that the magic expression is tied to their tradition which is something I loved about the movie.

Talking about the suspense acted in the movie, I will say it is reallu top notch. I will not have expected that the movie will end that way though and for many years, I keep waiting for season 6 to come but it didn't later come. At the end I gave up sha. The suspense in every season starting from season 1 flowing to every episode is something that will continually glued you to your screen. The betrayals, the friendship bond, the drama and the act of magic gives the perfect flow for the movie.

But even with that, one of the things that I believe should have been worked upon is how the movie ended. It didn't really end well. A lot of people including I was really pissed off on how the movie ended and I really wish it should have ended much more than it should be. But even with the flaws, it is definitely a movie I really watch and enjoy watching. I can watch it over and over again without getting tired.
