I don't get a chance to watch many movies these days. This makes me more selective and makes me look more into the movie I'm going to see. It has the side effect of being hard to like, but I can't complain about that because it leads to better movies.
Penelope was just one of them, a movie with a different love story, full of fantasy and romantic elements. They created a nice and fascinating character and through the shortcomings they put into the character, I can say that they provided a near-perfect story flow.
You must have realized by now that I liked the movie. Of course, there are reasons for this and I can't wait to tell you about them. I will try to elaborate as much as I can, but let's not spoil the pleasure of watching the movie for those who haven't seen it.
Born to a rich but cursed family, Penelope is born with a pig nose as a result of the curse. Raised by her mother away from the outside world and protected by her mother, it is believed that she must marry a nobleman in order to lift the curse on her.
While Penelope's marriage attempts constitute the main story of the movie, her appearance is the biggest obstacle in finding love. Because all her suitors run away as soon as they see her. As this cycle repeats itself over and over again, it starts the process that makes the character question her identity and the cruelty of the world.
Although the main story seems to be that Penelope's appearance prevents her from finding love, the character's self-discovery and the process of meeting the outside world were the most enjoyable moments of the story. I would have liked this discovery to be a bit more elaborated and the story to be a bit longer.
I must say that the movie has a visual aesthetic in the air of a fairy tale. The use of color makes Penelope's world fairytale-like and adds richness to the fantastic fiction. You have no difficulty adapting to the atmosphere created and you are immediately immersed in the story.
The drama aspect of the movie is based on understanding and discovering the character instead of creating a feeling of pity or sadness. I have to admit that I even laughed out loud in many of the dramatic scenes.
Christina Ricci, who gives life to the character of Penelope, skillfully reflects both a naive and strong personality. She makes the audience feel the inner conflict and the transformation process she goes through in the depths. She was definitely the actress who had the biggest share in the success of the fantastic story.
To describe the movie as just a romantic fairy tale fiction would be to ignore some of the social messages it contains. Society's prejudices and expectations on individuals were the most prominent ones. I can say that the way they were used and reflected in the story was one of the prominent details.
While the movie Penelope presented a gripping story, it was quite thought-provoking with some of the messages it contained. It was an extremely effective movie with its narration and strong character stance, and an extraordinary movie with the atmosphere it created. I recommend the movie to everyone who likes fantasy, romance and a bit of comedy.
Thank you for being here and for reading. Take care and goodbye!
