Hi guys, so today I'll be doing a movie review on this film:”Lemonade Mouth.”
I don't know if I'm the only one who enjoys watching old movies repeatedly.
Oh well, the amount of times I've watched Lemonade Mouth is so unhealthy.
It's such an iconic Disney Channel movie.
THE PLOT
It's about a group of misfit high school students who form a band and find their voices literally!
You get to meet Wen (the quiet, introverted one), Stella (the rebel with a strong cause), Olivia (the popular girl with a hidden talent), Mo (the outspoken, confident one), then Charlie (the music whiz).
Well, They all meet in detention and discovered their shared love for music.
When they started performing together, they realized that music was their escape from the drama and struggles of high school and even their homes. But that didn't actually excuse the fact that there were obstacles along the way. Like the school's very strict and hypocritical principal, who is so determined to shut them down and only supports sports since that's what brings him money.
All through the movie, the band faced some challenges but also learned valuable lessons about friendship, perseverance, and embracing their individuality. But guyssss, the music was everything for me
I'm still obsessed with one of the songs: "Turn Up the Music"!
THE REVIEW
I'd like to firstly describe the characters. The first for me is Olivia. She is so shy and she's the one trying to find her voice but knows how exactly to express herself when it counts. Then we have Wen who is so talented and has a thing for writing music but he literally just wants to be understood. Stella is the fierce one with zero tolerance for injustice. She got me all screaming “go girl!!” when she stood up to the principal. Charlie is so sweet and yeah so handsome too,(btw his hair is so fine). He is somewhat quiet and he's only in the band for his own redemption. But the one who stands out most, in terms of internal conflict, is definitely Mo.
In the movie, she’s from a strict traditional Indian family. You can see her father questioning her application of lipstick in the first scene.
Truthfully, her character made me begin to like the Indian culture.
Mo is one of the most relatable characters in the movie, but if you take a close look, both her relationship advice and actions are totally hypocritical. Like, she’s all about standing up for herself, being true to who she is, and not taking any crap from anyone. But when it comes to her relationships, especially with Scott, she’s almost the opposite. She lets herself get pulled into that very toxic relationship and it’s hard to watch her go back to him again and again when it’s clear that he doesn’t appreciate her. Like, she literally wrote a song about standing strong, and then she turns around and gives that same guy another chance? It’s almost like the movie didn’t want to show that growth in Mo’s character when it comes to love. She deserved better than the whole back and forth.
Honestly, I get it, high school relationships are messy, but it’s just so annoying how this really isn’t addressed. If you’re going to preach about self-worth, then follow through on that. The hypocrisy is real, and it makes it hard to even imagine myself being in her shoes.
But sincerely, this is still such a nostalgic film for me. I’m watching this for the fifth time and it feels like stepping back into my own high school years when we all had the “we’re different and rebellious” mindset. The movie never gets old. The music is still fire, and the message about finding your voice and staying true to who you are still resonates.
In the end, Lemonade Mouth has its flaws, but it’s still a classic. It’s the kind of movie you can watch a thousand times and always feel like you’re discovering something new even if it’s just realizing how much Mo’s relationship drama doesn’t make sense. But hey, I’m still here for the music and the nostalgia of it all. So, I guess it’s safe to say this movie still holds a special place in my heart, even if it’s got its issues.
