Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Review

in CineTV2 years ago

The greatest evil of those we have lost on the roads we have passed is that they remind us of themselves again and again. It is something that we cannot get rid of once we lose it. Their absence becomes their presence in our lives. We always, always remember. What form is losing? When we have a memory to remember, we have nothing to forget; It is the biggest pile that life throws at us.

If only we could delete the things we don't want from our memory, it would be nice if there was such a thing. Despite its confusion, it's definitely a movie worth watching.

Trying to say new things about a movie that met with countless viewers in various special screenings months before it was released, that has been the focus of various discussions, about which many articles have been written about, is really a difficult task. Especially when the movie in question is a movie that causes a sad smile even when its name is said out loud, the job becomes difficult on its own.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a 2004 romantic science-fiction film written by Charlie Kaufman and directed by Michel Gondry. The film stars Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet as a couple who undergo a procedure to erase their memories of each other after their relationship ends. The film explores themes of love, loss, and the human tendency to hold on to painful memories.

All the parts we don't want from our brains, which are programmed to remember painful times rather than happy moments, can be weeded out one by one with our consent. As it is said in the movie, this experience promises to open a clean slate for us.

At first glance, this film creates the same feeling of envy that arises when we look at the inaccessible smooth women, handsome men and their perfect relationships with secret admiration that we see in commercials. When we start watching, we realize that things are not as we expected. Rather than being an advertisement, it is actually a film that criticizes the consumer society.

The film begins with Joel (Carrey) and Clementine (Winslet) on a train, both of them trying to forget the other. We soon learn that they have undergone a procedure to erase their memories of each other, but as the procedure begins, Joel starts to have second thoughts and tries to hold on to the memories of their relationship.

As the procedure erases his memories, Joel relives moments from his relationship with Clementine in a nonlinear fashion. We see their first meeting at a beach house, their initial attraction, and the moments of joy and pain that defined their relationship.

One of the standout aspects of the film is its innovative use of nonlinear storytelling, which allows the viewer to experience Joel's memories out of order and see how they connect and intersect. This technique effectively captures the chaotic and unpredictable nature of memory and the ways in which our past experiences can haunt us.

The performances by Carrey and Winslet are also noteworthy. Carrey, known for his comedic roles, delivers a nuanced and emotional performance as Joel, while Winslet is equally impressive as Clementine, portraying her as a complex and unpredictable character. The chemistry between the two actors is palpable and adds depth to their characters and their relationship.

Are we those who live in the bustling city life without knowing what they are doing, and who come before them without stopping to think for a moment, be it an item, a meal or a person, who consume it? Have we filled our memory that much, have we exhausted everything so it's time to delete it? Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is a beautifully crafted film that explores the complexities of love and the power of memory. Its unique storytelling and strong performances make it a thought-provoking and emotionally resonant experience.

It's a movie in which we immerse ourselves in the flow without having time to think much about why we love and what we love. We finish the movie that we started watching with Wishes, accompanied by our own special meanings. The story that we hope to watch admiringly in the longing for forgetting and amnesia, perhaps offers us the meaning of life, who knows?
