This is a British drama film directed by Justin Chadwick and based on true events.
The story centers on the life of Kimani N'gan'ga Maruge, an 84-year-old man who decides to enroll in elementary school in Kenya after the government announced free primary education for all children.
The film is inspired by the life of Maruge, who became a symbol of the struggle for education in his country.
The plot begins in a post-war context, where Maruge, played by Oliver Litondo, has lived a life full of hardship and suffering.
During his youth, he witnessed violence and oppression during Kenya's struggle for independence.

Despite his traumatic experiences, Maruge has a deep desire to learn to read and write, something he was denied in his childhood due to lack of access to education.
When the Kenyan government implements the free education policy, Maruge sees an opportunity to fulfill her dream. However, her decision to attend elementary school is not well received by everyone.
The school principal, teacher Jane Obinchu, played by Naomie Harris, is skeptical at first, as the presence of an old man in a classroom full of children poses challenges and tensions.
Despite this, Jane is inspired by Maruge's determination and decides to support him in his quest for knowledge.
As the story progresses, the film explores the challenges Maruge faces on his path to education.

Despite the teasing and skepticism of some parents and students, Maruge becomes a dedicated and enthusiastic student.
His presence at the school also brings about a change in the community, as many begin to question their own attitudes toward education and the importance of providing opportunities for all, regardless of age.
The relationship between Maruge and Jane develops throughout the film, showing how both characters learn from each other.
Jane becomes an advocate for Maruge, fighting bureaucracy and prejudice to ensure that he has the opportunity to learn.
As Maruge progresses in his studies, he also becomes a role model for the children at the school, inspiring them to value education and pursue their dreams.
The film unfolds in an emotionally resonant context, with moving performances that capture the essence of Maruge's struggle.
Chadwick's cinematography and direction succeed in conveying the beauty and complexity of Kenya, as well as the indomitable spirit of its protagonist.
Interesting, an 85 year old man in elementary school, I've never imagined that and I think I would be among those who were very skeptical about that idea.
But it would be a nice watch to see how all that unfolds.
