The Age Of Blood (2017) Review

Imdb

I saw this movie, Age of Blood(2017), last week, and I was totally satisfied, especially with how everything was blended into 1 hour and 41 minutes instead of being stretched into a series. I'm not saying that I don’t like series, of course, I do, but this one, having everything properly put together in just over an hour and a half, was so good.

This movie shows how a former king’s guard, who failed to meet the high standards required to protect the king, was demoted to a mere prison guard. He was mocked, and even he himself disliked the position, but he accepted the offer. On his very first night on duty, a dreaded group stormed the prison, demanding the release of their leader, who had already been sentenced to death and was merely awaiting execution for revolting against the king. This newly employed prison guard, Kim Ho, stood against them and declared that they would not get away with what they had come for.

At this point, I started wondering what was driving him to fight them, these were tough martial artists, and he was standing alone against them, refusing to let them succeed in their mission. I know that was the script, but if I were in his shoes, I wouldn’t have stayed to confront them, knowing full well that death could be the outcome. Take note: all the other prison guards were slaughtered, leaving only him.

Did they succeed in getting their leader out of prison? I don’t want to spoil it for you. Go ahead and watch the movie.

My Opinions and Ratings

Just as I mentioned earlier, I was pleased with the movie. The storyline was solid, and Kim Ho’s passion and dedication were excellently portrayed.

However, a movie like this can't be without some errors and shortcomings. The first on my list is how most of the characters were not properly introduced. By “introduced,” I mean they weren’t given enough focus or depth, as the movie primarily centered on the superhero, Kim Ho. Okay, maybe that’s just my personal opinion, but I wanted more depth for certain characters, such as the leaders of the gang that came to rescue their main leader.

The actor from Alchemy of Souls, Do Man-cheol, played one of these roles, and I felt his character should have been explored more.

Another issue is the common "superhero who just won’t die" trope, which sometimes feels overly exaggerated in movies. This film was no exception. Kim Ho sustained the same cuts and injuries that killed others, including his own master, yet he never succumbed. It would have made more sense if he hadn’t endured so many life-threatening wounds.

That being said, the martial arts scenes were epic—well-coordinated and thrilling to watch. It’s a movie that started with a fight and ended with a fight.

I would rate it 8/10. Yes, it’s worth it!
