“He creates a SITUATION, hoping that we will get a REVELATION!”

“Sometimes, the MIRACLE is in the RIDICULE!”

This 2022 Ghanian-Nigerian Christian Faith-based film is an emotional one. This movie is such good material!

Executively produced by Uchenna Mbunabo & Eunice Oheneba Asiedu and produced & directed by Paschal Amanfo is this masterpiece titled “God is African”

SYNOPSES(may include some spoilers)

Amana Essel (Roselyn Ngissah) and her husband Daniel (Deyemi Okanlawon) are devout Christians and have been married for 10 years.

During this time, Amana has suffered multiple miscarriages and six still births. The last was the final nail on the coffin for Amana as she then began to vehemently question her faith, trust & belief in God.

Her husband is frustrated with all the losses & childbearing complications, but seeing his wife struggle physically and mentally just breaks him in more ways than he could imagine.

How will this couple pull through this difficult time? Will they eventually have a child of their own? Are they being haunted by a sin from the past? Is there a foundation that had been hitherto destroyed? And finally, what can the righteous do?

MOVIE REVIEW

Please tell me Rosemary Ngissah got an award for the role she played in this movie! That was beyond acting. It felt personal - she took that character PERSONAL!

Deyemi Okanlawon embodied his role. His facial expressions, body language, and speech mannerisms couldn’t have been more fitting.

Flesh and blood did not reveal this story to the writer as this is purely divinely inspired. The lines used were clean, you’d be bathed in goosebumps; the script, inspirational! The approach adopted in this movie as per direction wasn’t very preachy, but you get absorbed into the Christian realm quite naturally.

The title is quite a controversial one, in my opinion, but I totally get it. Contrary to the picture that was painted and handed over to our forefathers in Africa by the early missionaries that God is a white man reflected on digital photos & imagery of a 'White Jesus,' this movie portrays that “God is African” which then means that at the end of the day, GOD IS GOD! God is not limited to any location, tribe, ethnicity, nationality, or continent! God is God for everyone and in every region.

The pace is somewhat slow and could easily make for “boring” to an impatient audience. Good thing it’s on YouTube. Hence, you can adjust the speed to your desire. The hairs used were not very impressive, but c’omon, let’s focus on the message delivered, shall we?

The camera angles were great. However, the overall picture quality isn’t exactly vivid. Well, I guess it’s a low-budget film. Nonetheless, the sound effects did set the tensed-tone and depressed mood. The soundtrack from Moses Bliss just had to be the icing on the cake.

Reservations:

▪︎ Given the interior and exterior of the couple’s residence , it shows that they’re rich. Couldn’t they have opted for surrogacy or IVF or other medical interventions to help with the crisis?

It’s a movie set in the modern day…I mean this was shot in 2022, not 1992. For all the losses she suffered, one medical rescue should have put paid the pains. Well, I guess Amana was particularly hellbent on birthing her own child her own way.

▪︎ When Amana kept declaring faith (that looked like she was going crazy) against the doctor’s report, couldn’t they have just run a scan right away to ascertain her assertions?

▪︎ Doctors in the house, please help us out here. Without a womb, is it possible for a woman to conceive? Ok! “He calleth those things which be not as though they were!” Right? Or was Amana pregnant with twins during the procedure, and they forgot to take one foetus out?

If you’ve seen the movie, please let me know what your thoughts are in the comment section.

To wrap up...

This was a chilling experience, a thought-provoking watch, a faith-rejuvenating moment…interesting, inspiring, educative, compelling, and engaging. The plot and subplots all worked together seamlessly. Kudos to all who took part in this project.

Majid Michel gave us a doze of his unique talking voice…Exceptional as always.

Trust me, this film is highly recommended. You really want to see it.

I hope that this was interesting to read. Thanks for coming around.
