OSCAR 2025 SIN PENAS NI GLORIAS.
Acabo de ver Anora la película que ganó el Óscar este año 2025. Excesivamente larga. Trivial en su planteamiento y en el desarrollo de sus personajes. Nada relevante. Cuando terminé de ver ese filme, pensé que a veces es imprescindible conservar la importancia del tiempo junto a nosotros.
Es una pena cómo una industria con el potencial que tiene el cine se decante por historias tontas y vacías, con muy poco que aportar al intelecto.
Mientras saboreaba el café amargo de la paciencia frente al monitor de mi computadora, gracias al paquete semanal, me hacía muchas preguntas ante lo que estaba viendo. Conservaba intacta la inocencia de quien va al cine a disfrutar de una historia. Creía que, de un momento a otro, aparecería en la pantalla ese instante inolvidable por el cual la cinta había sido elegida para el premio que dicen es el más importante del cine internacional.
Pero de premios y premiados sabemos que está empedrado el camino hacia el olvido. Al principio de mi vida como escritor, no había concurso que dejara escapar. Sin ningún tipo de rubor, debo confesar que le hacía swing a todo lo que veía. A veces tuve alguna suerte, y, por suerte, la mayoría de las veces, fui ignorado por el jurado. Pero ese ya es otro gran tema que seguramente traeré a Hive en alguna ocasión.
La trama de la película premiada en Hollywood sigue a Anora "Ani" Mikheeva, una stripper que vive en Brighton Beach, un barrio ruso-estadounidense en Brooklyn, un lugar conquistado por los trenes que pasan invariablemente, dejando atrás el estremecimiento y la conmoción de que todo el ruido del mundo está en ese lugar. ¡Vaya, que peor no le puede ir a nuestra protagonista!
La dinámica de "chica pobre conoce a chico rico" ya estaba planteada. Destilando sexo desde la mismísima primera escena, la cinta nos cuenta que, en diciembre de 2018, el jefe de la protagonista le presenta a Ivan «Vanya» Zakharov. Vanya es el hijo de un oligarca ruso y está en Estados Unidos para estudiar. En lugar de eso, prefiere divertirse y jugar videojuegos en la mansión de su familia en Brooklyn. Vanya contrata a Ani para varios encuentros sexuales; incluso, le paga 15.000 dólares para que se quede con él una semana.
Anora se estrenó el 21 de mayo de 2024 en el 77.º Festival de Cine de Cannes. Ganó la Palma de Oro. Luego, llegó a los cines el 18 de octubre de 2024. La crítica la elogió. Fue elegida como una de las 10 mejores películas de 2024 por el National Board of Review y el American Film Institute. En los Premios BAFTA, ganó Mejor Reparto y Mejor Actriz para Madison. Con semejante hoja de servicios, llegó el ansiado Óscar, y la Academia se lució otorgándole al filme cinco premios: Mejor Película, Dirección, Montaje, Guión Original y Mejor Actriz.
Madison ganó Mejor Actriz y recibió más de 20 premios internacionales por este papel. La película recaudó más de 25 millones de dólares, lo que la convirtió en una de las más taquilleras de la temporada.
Para mí fue un cliché sazonado con sexo gratis y algo de absurdo. ¿Qué es sino un grupo de hombres en un auto buscando a Vanya por toda la ciudad? ¿Puede haber algo más insulso que eso?
Yo, que ya llevo un tiempo en este asunto de los guiones, me percato en un instante de que, están estirando la historia como un chicle, lo cual no consigue otra cosa que no sea el aburrimiento y el divorcio absoluto con la estética del cine como hecho artístico.
Con este Óscar, pierde el cine una oportunidad magnífica para posicionarse en el alma de la gente como tabla de salvación ante la salvaje involución que vivimos como especie. ¿Serán los tiempos o seré yo?
Y no es que el sexo esté mal, por Dios. Es que esta historia no vibra ni conecta. Los sabores que va dejando no son días de gloria.

OSCARS 2025: WITHOUT SHAME OR GLORY
I just saw Anora the film that won the Oscar this year 2025. Excessively long. Trivial in its approach and character development. Nothing relevant. When I finished watching that film, I thought that sometimes it is essential to keep the importance of time with us.
It's a shame how an industry with the potential of cinema leans towards silly and empty stories, offering very little to the intellect.
As I sipped the bitter coffee of patience in front of my computer monitor, thanks to something we in Cuba call the Weekly Package, I found myself asking many questions about what I was watching.
I still hold onto the innocence of someone who goes to the movies to enjoy a story. I kept thinking that, at any moment, that unforgettable scene would appear on the screen—the one that had earned the film the award they say is the most important in international cinema.
But we know that the path to oblivion is paved with awards and winners. At the beginning of my life as a writer, I never missed a contest. Without any shame, I must confess that I used to swing at everything I saw. Sometimes I got lucky, and, fortunately, most of the time, I was ignored by the jury. But that’s another big topic that I’ll surely bring to Hive on some occasion.
The plot of the award-winning Hollywood film follows Anora "Ani" Mikheeva, a stripper who lives in Brighton Beach, a Russian-American neighborhood in Brooklyn, a place conquered by trains that rush by furiously, leaving behind the trembling and commotion that all the noise in the world is concentrated in that place. Wow, things couldn’t get much worse for our protagonist!
The dynamic of "poor girl meets rich boy" was already set. Oozing sex from the very first scene, the film tells us that in December 2018, the protagonist’s boss introduces her to Ivan «Vanya» Zakharov. Vanya is the son of a Russian oligarch and is in the United States to study. Instead, he prefers to have fun and play video games at his family’s mansion in Brooklyn. Vanya hires Ani for several sexual encounters; he even pays her $15,000 to stay with him for a week.
Anora, written and directed by Sean Baker and starring Mikey Madison, premiered on May 21, 2024, at the 77th Cannes Film Festival. It won the Palme d'Or. It then hit theaters on October 18, 2024. It was chosen as one of the top 10 films of 2024 by the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. At the BAFTA Awards, it won Best Ensemble and Best Actress for Madison. With such a resume, it reached the coveted Oscars, and the Academy shone by awarding the film five awards: Best Picture, Director, Editing, Original Screenplay, and Best Actress.
Madison received over 20 international awards for this role. The film grossed over $25 million, making it one of the highest-grossing films of the season.
For me, it was a cliché seasoned with free sex and a touch of absurdity. What else is a group of men in a car searching for Vanya all over the city? Can there be anything more insipid than that?
I, having been in this scriptwriting business for a while, noticed that they were stretching the story like chewing gum, which achieves nothing but boredom and a complete divorce from the aesthetics of any narrative argument.
With this Oscar, cinema loses a magnificent opportunity to position itself in people’s souls as a lifeline against the savage devolution we are experiencing as a species. Is it the times, or is it me?
And it’s not that sex is bad, for God’s sake. It’s that this story doesn’t resonate or connect. The flavors it leaves behind don’t taste like glory.

I also found it rather overrated and a politically correct choice as the oscar winner. When you read just the plotline it's like having watched 95% of the movie. Nice to see I'm not alone in this opinion.

Siempre pasa lo mismo. Vine a enterarme del filme en los Oscars. O sea, no debe ser la gran cosa si no ha venido sonando desde hace meses, como pasaba con otros grandes filmes. Y otros no tan grandes, pero que sonaron fuerte, como Dune.
Esta es una historia más que demuestra lo falso que puede ser un premio.
