The birth of Cloverfield- a very different monster-movie experience. Shot like real film footage, young people's regular night in New York turns very swiftly into chaos with a rampaging giant monster. If you like a mix of action and horror with a bit of mystery, it will get its hooks into you from the first minute until the last.
The story begins with the found footage visual display for the camera records with the regular handheld camera the kind of camera you have in your own possession and being a part of the story. Rob is preparing to move to Japan and is given a farewell party by his friends. Excitement and joy fill the air one moment, and suddenly all hell breaks loose as an explosion shakes the city and people run to every direction.
A major monster but that is not the real horror
Cloverfield's outstanding trait is that we hardly see the monster especially at the beginning, instead, its first major appearance occurs cinematographically when the head of the Statue of Liberty rolls down the street, terrorizing the inhabitants and becoming one of the major iconography of the film. Gradually, we find out that this very huge monster brings down even smaller terrifying creatures that attack all living beings on its way, which makes everything worse-Destroyed city is the least of human beings' troubles on.
While Rob and his friends try to escape from the chaos, heavy-duty drama sets in when he learns that his girlfriend is trapped in her apartment under the rubble. Rather than escape, he makes the insane decision to go back to rescue her, putting the events in a race against time filled with terror, destruction, and decisions that carry fatal weight. On all of this, we get a camerawork that shakes and stirs with dizzying speed, which further enhances viewer tension and horror.
An open ending filled with unanswered questions
This is the mysterious way the film ends without spoiling the events, attracting numerous people to sit down and analyze the last moments of the film and trying to figure out precisely what happened. Was the monster an alien being? A scientific experiment gone wrong? What was the fate of those few people who had survived? The film gives no definitive answers to any of these questions, and this is part of its appeal, which has kept people talking about it into the present day.
Another plus of this film is, unlike any regular monster movie, it places you right in the middle of the events as if the actions are occurring around you. The filming badly done, timeline, and realism made it a unique cinematic experience. If you are a sucker for movies that keep you at the edge of your seat and enjoy stories that bring mysteries to be solved, Cloverfield will be the perfect choice for you.
