Plot
The film opens with a bereavement, the mother of our young protagonist, Joe, has passed away due to a terrible accident she had at work. His father, Jack, is a police officer in the city of Ohio. Both will process the grief in different ways. Four months later, Joe helps his best friend Charles shoot and make a home movie dealing with zombies with his dad's Super 8 camera. That night they plan together with their other friends, Preston, Martin and Cary to shoot a scene from the movie at a train stop. Charles tells Joe that he invited Alice, a girl he seems to like to act in the project as well. She will drive them around in a car, one that she will "borrow from her father" that night. At the train station they start filming as they watch a train go by at top speed, but something strange happens behind them: a van pulls up behind the train and the two collide, causing it to derail and explode completely, shattering into pieces as explosions fly everywhere. The first thing I will say is how much I love this unique plot this film has that, while it has a backstory obviously of what appears to be the aftermath of an alien invasion, what we see from the beginning is the everyday life of a young teenager with his friends trying to film and make a movie as the city goes into chaos. Not to mention how the train incident causes what is a rather unfortunate series of events for the people of the town, we get to see how young Joe meets and begins to bond with Alice, a girl who at first we see as his dream girl, but then we realize that they are or share more than they think.
