A Movie From an Unnamed Gangster Movie Sub-genre: Fast Charlie (2024)

in CineTV23 hours ago

I watched this Joe Rogan interview where he interviewed Quentin Tarantino. He asked Tarantino a question about Pulp Fiction and Tarantino's answer led Tarantino to say that with Pulp Fiction (1994) he created a sub-genre under the gangster movie genre.

And that many people have gone on to make movies in that sub-genre in order to fill it up so Pulp Fiction isn't the only movie of that genre. He didn't mention titles, but I'm sure we know what he means.

He means gangster movies that are about gangs and henchmen who had some missions and adventures but not a gangster movie serious and extensively about the gang like Godfather. I think the movie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) falls into that category, etc.

I just watched Fast Charlie (2024) and I think it falls into that sub-genre perfectly! And I think it is a great addition to the sub-genre, a very entertaining and well made addition.

First of all, how good that we had Pierce Brosnan known for his James Bond movies as the lead character. Brosnan is the ladies man, even in his old age, and having him leading any movie makes almost makes it a must-watch in any good movie watcher's books.

It was nice to see him lead this. Other actors I liked was Nigerian-American actor Gbenga Akinnagbe and Morena Baccarin. Great actors who all did great jobs and were such a pleasure to watch.

The story was good with no plot holes. There were some cool twists too, and the adventure Brosnan's character had to go through was just so entertaining.

The humor, action, acting, setting, and plot all came together perfectly. I'm surprised this movie isn't talked about more. But maybe that's because it was more of a low budget movie ($16 million budget according to Wikipedia), but low budget doesn't mean poor.

A great low budget movie is one where you don't see the need for a higher budget, like everything was so well made in the small world created that it looked like adding anything extra would have ruined the movie.

That's exactly what Fast Charlie felt like.

At least it's IMDB rating is 6/10 and it's Rotten Tomatoes is 83%, so it's getting at least some of it's dues. Many high budget movies with up to $100 million in their budgets don't have good scores like that. I still wish this movie was talked about more, though.

I'd totally recommend. Especially if you like gangster movies where gangster rules and code is brought up, gangster adventure, humor, realistic looking fight scenes, guns and hitmen. And if you like Pierce Brosnan.
