Bride Wars - Subpar at best (Movie review)

in CineTV12 days ago

It takes a lot for me to watch movies where the main characters are being unrealistically dramatic but as I've noticed, shows produced in the early 2000s have a way of keeping their attempts at being overdramatic in line. And that's probably what makes them a delight for me.

I started this movie sometime during the holiday but somehow, I didn't get to finish it. This week, when I finally decided to watch a movie after few weeks of not watching one, I decided to go back to this particular one since it started out on a pretty good note for me.

Bride wars is a 2009 American romantic comedy that stars Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson as it's main actors. Emma is a teacher who looks forward to a dream wedding she's always wanted, as a kid. She shares the news of her engagement with her girl group and soon, begins to look forward to plans for a wedding.

Olivia is a lawyer who also harbored the same dream wedding as Emma, her childhood, and best friend. When she hears of her best friend's engagement, she sweet-talks her boyfriend into giving her the ring sooner than he intended too. Both ladies now have two weddings to plan for each other. They go ahead shop together and make plans for the venue together as brides-to-be. But when they go to book the venue, the lady in charge, somehow, mixes up both their dates, and sets it for the same day. And since none of them is willing to compromise for the other, all hell breaks loose.

In a way, I could relate to this movie. As a girl, when it comes to my wedding, I would look forward to everything going as planned. It definitely doesn't have to be anyone's idea of perfect. As far as I'm pleased with how the preparations are coming along, I'm fine. And so, when the mix up happened, I felt bad for them somewhat. No girl who ever wished for a single wedding with her best friend by her side would be happy with that turnout.

There wasn't much character development, and that was something I believe this movie needed. Bestfriends can't be fighting and you don't show us about happy times in their lives as best friends. We shouldn't only be focusing on the downs in their relationship, should we? The pacing too, was fast. I think that aided my watching better because watching a movie about two people who were in a competition with each other, isn't one of the best tropes out there.

I enjoyed this movie, mostly because the whole point of the comedy wasn't lost but I couldn't help some questions that were raised in my head. Emma and Olivia were the closest in the friend group and before you term yourself best friends, you both must love each other platonically, more than you do any other friends, don't you? Why then, are you both so bent on destroying each other's big day? Why go to such extents to ruin things for each other? If I and my best friend's wedding, happened to fall on the same day, I won't like it because yeahh, I've always looked forward to acting as the ever busy chief bridesmaid at my best-friend's wedding. It's that simple? Yes. The way they switched up on each other the moment they found out their dates were mixed up, showed that they weren't best friends at heart. They both did too much and as enjoyable as the film started out, it got tiresome when they both continued going against each other.

I would have loved to analyse more about the characters but no, that would be too much spoilers. I didn't really like the way this movie ended. With the turnout of events, everything I had been watching from the beginning lost meaning at the end. Of course, It could have ended better.

This was a light watch and maybe if I had finished it the day I started it, I would have rated it way above 5.5/10. But with how stressed out I've been lately, it is to me, worth absolutely this little above average rating.

Thanks for reading
