As it is true with so many of the @cinetv Twitter Prompts and Weekly Contests, it is near impossible to pick just one movie to encompass the emotions and attachments we developed with these endearing films and today's Twitter prompt, created by our very talented, @thisismylife, is no different. The prompt today begged the answer to what our favorite Leonardo DiCaprio film was and I went back and forth for the longest time trying to pick the one the moved me the most and I settled upon The Departed.
First of all it is nearly impossible to go wrong when picking a movie helmed by Martin Scorsese and even more so when that cinematic masterpiece contains an ensemble as rich in talent and film history as The Departed. It is a venerable "who's who" of Hollywood heavyweights and each one of them pulled of a stellar performance befitting of their legendary statuses. The writing, composition, and cinematography of this film is quite beautiful and the stand-out performance was that of Leonardo DiCaprio in his role of an undercover cop.
His performance was so raw and genuine that you could feel his pain and smell his fears as they developed on screen and as it is so often true of works by Scorsese, no one is immune from pain and suffering of the highest order, including main characters.
If you have not seen this piece of high art, you are doing yourself a disservice and should remedy that at the soonest possible chance you get. You will not be dissapointed.
One of the films that came in a very, very close second place was another Scorsese masterpiece, Shutter Island. This film is so gripping and visually immersive that it was so hard not to list is as my top choice. The suspense of this film is palpable and it keeps you guessing from wonderful scene to wonderful scene. It also doesn't hurt that it co-stars one of my favorite, and often underrated, actors, Mark Ruffalo. This is another must-see film and would definitely add it to the top of you to-do list if you haven't already enjoyed it!
To add an honorable mention, I wanted to highlight a film that is often overlooked and underappreciated, Baz Luhrmann's interpretation of the timeless Romeo + Juliet. This is also not his solitary dance with DiCaprio as he is the visionary director of the modern remake of The Great Gatsby (another one that almost made the #1 spot today..lololol). This modern retelling of the Bard's classic tale had such unique visions of a modern version of this story that is above compelling and a great performance was given my a much younger Leonardo DiCaprio. The scene selections are divine, as is the cinematography. If you love a visual movie, this is the one for you...trust me!
Well those are just a small sampling of my favorite DiCaprio movies and I sincerely hope you give them a chance if you have not already seen them. I honestly think Leo has played some brilliant roles! I don't know if I saw Shutter Island, probably not as it doesn't ring a bell. Need to add that one I guess, gosh the list just keeps going!
