Hello again, back for another contest, I'm really liking this contests, they are making me revisit my favorite movies from different genres, and this week's Contest #10 is about my favorite genre: scary movies.
Hola de nuevo, de regreso para otro concurso, realmente me están gustando estos concursos, me hacen volver a ver mis películas favoritas de distintos géneros, y para el concurso de esta semana es sobre mi género favorito: películas de terror.

A while ago I wrote about mi favorite horror film saga: Rec which is a 4 movie story about zombies created by possession, I enjoy watching zombie movies and Rec is my favorite zombie movie, but being a scary movies fan I've watched a lot, and it's kinda hard to find something scaring after years and years of watching many movies of the genre.
Among my favorites are: Hereditary, The Orphan, It (both versions), Misery, and Silent Hill... and some others but those are kinda my top, but not long ago I watched The Exorcism of God and became one of my favorites, that's the one I picked for this contest.
Hace tiempo escribís obre mi saga de terror favorita: Rec que es una historia de 4 películas sobre zombies creados por posesión, disfruto ver películas de zombies y Rec es mi favorita del género, pero siendo una fan de películas de miedo he visto bastantes, y es algo difícil de encontrar algo que asuste luego de años y años de ver varias películas del género.
Entre mis favoritas están: El legado del Diablo, La Huérfana, Eso (ambas versiones), Misery y Terror en Silent Hill... y algunas otras pero esas son mi top, pero no hace mucho vi El Exorcismo de Dios y se hizo una de mis favoritas, es la que elegí para este concurso.

A couple of months ago I went to the movies with my friends, we all love scary movies and most of the time we talk about what we hated from the movies we watch, but when we watched The Exorcism of God we were gladly surprised by its story... the effects weren't the best but that's easily ignored because they don't abuse of those bad cgi effects all the time, they play with lights and shadows to create a scary and claustrophobic atmosphere.
At first we assumed it was going to be an Exorcist rip off like many, many other exorcisms movies that exist, we thought that because of the remake of the famous Exorcist scene where the priest is outside the house where the possessed girl is, with mist all around and just a light coming out from a window.
Hace un par de meses fui al cine con mis amigas, amamos las películas de terror y la mayor parte del tiempo hablamos de lo que odiamos de las películas que vemos, pero cuando vimos El Exorcismo de Dios fuimos gratamente sorprendidas por su historia... los efectos no fueron los mejores pero eso es fácil de ignorar porque no abusan de malos efectos generados por computadora todo el tiempo, juegan con las luces y sombras para crear una atmósfera de miedo y claustrofóbica.
Al inicio asumimos que sería una copia del Exorcista como otras tantas, tantas películas de exorcismos que existen, pensamos eso porque rehicieron la famosa escena del Exorcista donde el padre está fuera de la casa donde la niña poseída está, con la niebla alrededor y solo una luz saliendo de una ventana.
Written by Santiago Fernández Calvete and Alejandro Hidalgo who also directed it, this 2021 movie take us to Mexico, which one of the priests describes as hell which was offensive but also isn't far from the truth with all things happening in this country now... but anyway, everything happens in a small remote town, Father Peter Williams faces a possession of a young woman called Magali and he's supposed to wait from another father coming from the Vatican to perform the exorcism together. While waiting, Magali gets worse so Father Peter starts the exorcism, but the demon Balban is stronger, he possesses Father Peter too, and forces him to commit a sin with Magali, after this Balban leaves Magali's body and Father Peter is seen as a miracle worker, compared as a saint.
18 years later, Father Peter remains in the small town helping as much as he can with charity, he wants to purge himself from the sin he committed with Magali during the exorcism, he's been carrying that secret for a long time, but soon that secret is about to come out when Magali asks for his help, the demon Balban is back... actually he never left, he just waited in someone's body, inside Esperanza, Magali's daughter, the daughter she had in sin with Father Peter while possessed.
Escrita por Santiago Fernández Calvete y Alejandro Hidalgo quien también la dirigió, esta película del 2021 nos lleva a México, al que uno de los padres describe como el infierno lo cual fue ofensivo pero no está tan alejado de la realidad con todas las cosas ocurriendo en este país ahora... pero en fin, todo pasa en una pequeña y remota ciudad, el Padre Peter Williams enfrenta la posesión de una joven mujer llamada Magali y se supone debe esperar a otro padre que viene del Vaticano para realizar juntos el exorcismo. Mientras espera, Magali se pone peor así que el Padre Peter comienza el exorcismo, pero el demonio Balban es más fuerte, posee al Padre Peter también, y lo forza a cometer pecado con Magali, luego de esto Balban deja el cuerpo de Magali y el Padre Peter es visto como un milagroso, comparado a un santo.
18 años después, el Padre Peter continúa en el pequeño pueblo ayudando tanto como pueda con caridad, quiere purgarse del pecado que cometió con Magali durante el exorcismo, ha llevado ese secreto por mucho tiempo, pero pronto ese secreto está por salir cuando Magali le pide ayuda, el demonio Balban regresó... de hecho nunca se fue, solo esperó en el cuerpo de alguien, dentro de Esperanza, la hija de Magali, la hija que tuvo en pecado con el Padre Peter estando posesídos.
Father Peter contacts the Vatican, he this time waits for help, Vatican sends Father Michael who has performed successful exorcisms before, although he never mentions the price he had to pay, he just claims he hasn't paid for it yet.
Both start to deal with the possessed Esperanza who is locked in a prison. The presence of Balban on the small town start to be shown, most of the kids in town get mysteriously ill and eventually die, the church stops being a sacred and secure place when Balban's influence starts to manifest in the place haunting every person who is there, the sacred figures representing saints become haunting presences scaring the kids and nuns that are in the orphanage by the church.
Father Michael claims that in order to defeat evil during the exorcism, they must think of themselves as God and not just emissaries, Father Peter has problem with it because it's blasphemy, and also he knows he can't perform an exorcism if he's carrying a sin, he knows if he reveals what he's done he'll be heavily judged on earth and heaven.
Eventually both fathers confess their sins to each other, meanwhile, Balban's power starts possessing other women from the prison leaving both fathers trapped inside with them, when they can trap Esperanza they start the ritual but it's not working at all, instead, Balban and all possessed women start to perform an exorcism of their own, they want to exorcise God and all kindness out of Father Peter.
As any other exorcism movie, a battle between good and evil starts, and finally Esperanza is free and Father Peter efforts are recognized by the Vatican so they invite him as being part of their congregation.
El Padre Peter contacta al Vaticano, esta vez espera la ayuda, el Vaticano envía al Padre Michael quien ha realizado con éxito exorcismos antes, aunque nunca menciona el precio que ha tenido que pagar, solo dice que no lo ha pagado aún.
Ambos lidian con la poseída Esperanza que está encerrada en una prisión. La presencia de Balban en el pueblito comienza a mostrarse, muchos de los niños del lugar enferman misteriosamente y eventualmente mueren, la iglesia deja de ser un lugar sagrado y seguro cuando la influencia de Balban comienza a manifestarse en el lugar acechando a cada persona presente, las figuras sagradas representando santos se convierten en presencias aterradoras asustando a los niños y monjas que están en el orfanato junto a la iglesia.
El Padre Michael dice que para vencer al mal durante el exorcismo, deben verse a sí mismos como Dios y no solo sus emisarios, el Padre Peter tiene problema con esto por ser blasfemia, y también sabe que no puede realizar el exorcismo si carga un pegado, sabe que si revela lo que ha hecho será duramente juzgado en la tierra y en el cielo.
Eventualmente ambos padres se confiesan mutuamente sus pecados, mientras tanto, el poder de Balban comienza a poseer a otras mujeres de la prisión dejando a ambos padres encerrados con ellas, cuando logran atrapar a Esperanza comienzan el ritual pero no funciona del todo, en vez de eso, Balban y todas las mujeres poseídas comienzan un exorcismo por su parte, quieren exorcizar a Dios y toda la bondad fuera del padre Peter.
Como cualquier otra película de exorcismos, comienza una batalla entre el bien y el mal, finalmente Esperanza es libre y los esfuerzos del Padre Peter son reconocidos por el Vaticano, así que lo invitan a formar parte de su congregación.
Conclusion
This doesn't sound any different from many other movies about exorcisms, right? well, what I liked about it is that the exorcism turned around, usually is the good expelling evil and the possessed person eventually free, here is evil expelling good from someone who's supposed to be God's emissary on earth, a man of faith, and evil succeeds, Balban succeeds on exorcising God out of Father Peter and now Peter is an emissary of Devil himself entering the Vatican, and is revealed that he's not the only demon who is already into the Vatican working its influence to Devil's benefit, their plan is to gain power on earth above God by owning religious representatives knowing that many persons will follow them.
I liked this different approach to a common possession story. Just like both fathers were having inner battles with their sins is relatable, every person has inner battles, for some persons their inner good wins, for others their evil side wins, both sides reside in us and are tempted or tested to lean to each side.
And although the visual effects aren't great, it has some good non predictable scare jumps.
Conclusión
No suena muy diferente a otras películas sobre exorcismos ¿cierto? bueno, lo que me gustó es que el exorcismo se invierte, usualmente es el bien expulsando al mal y la persona poseída sale libre, aquí es el mal expulsando el bien de alguien que se supone es un emisario de Dios en la tierra, un hombre de fé, y el mal tiene éxito, Balban triunfa al exorcizar a Dios fuera del Padre Peter, y ahora Peter es un emisario del Demonio abriéndose camino al Vaticano, y se revela que no es el único demonio que ya está dentro del Vaticano moviendo sus influencias a beneficio del Diablo, su plan es reunir poder sobre Dios en la tierra haciéndose de representantes religiosos sabiendo que muchas personas los seguirán.
Me gustó este enfoque diferente a una historia común de posesión. Tal como ambos padres tenían sus batallas internas con sus pecados es relacionable, cada persona tiene batallas internas, para algunas personas su bondad interna gana, para otros su lado malvado gana, ambos lados residen en nosotros y nos tientan o ponen a prueba para hacernos inclinar a cada lado.
Y aunque los efectos visuales no fueron la gran cosa, tiene buenos sustos que no son tan predecibles.

My bravery fades when I'm alone at home and wake up in the middle of the night because of a noise... But generally speaking I enjoy all kind of movies at all times.
