I thought about choosing Troy, Ocean of Fire, or The Ghost and the Darkness, but chose this one for its, as far as I know, greater burden of historical accuracy over the others.

Damnit, cooki, move your ass...!

This is the story of Carl Brashear, but also of Billy Sunday, and the strange relationship they end up forging is what I like most about the film.

Little time has passed in the United States since the abolition of the laws that prevented blacks from joining the Navy, and Carl Brashear, one of them, decides to join the Navy's diving school. But although the laws have changed, many people have not.

Billy Sunday is the instructor, who at the beginning of the film is seen by Brashear disobeying orders and risking his life to save a diver in danger from an accident and ended up being forced to withdraw from further dives because of the consequences to his health. Sunday warns Brashear that it is better for him to resign and makes things more difficult for him than for the others, although it seems that he does it more because his boss tells him to and does not want to antagonize him than because he has that impulse, but because of Brashear's persistence he ends up disobeying another order in the end, with more problems... but he recognizes and allows Brashear to achieve his goal: to become a Navy diver.

And this could have been the end of the story; also, in between, Brashear had fallen in love and got married. However, there is still another episode: saving the lives of a couple of sailors during an accident at sea, Brashear is left with a disabled leg and they want to force him to retire. But although they had no contact, Sunday decides to help him to annoy some superiors and they face together the bureaucracy and the logical problems of Brashear to remain a diver with a synthetic leg.

The film, then, is a story of persistence in every sense: persistence in the face of people who look down on you for nothing, in the face of life's harsh accidents, and in the face of bureaucrats concerned with their careers rather than doing their jobs well. And this also includes the problem Sunday develops with alcohol halfway through the film, and I liked quite a lot what his wife said to him when he was at his lowest point: "I'll be in the car outside when you go out. If you promise never to drink another drop of alcohol, get in the car. If not, keep walking," showing that she loved him but would not self-destruct with him.

As final comments: the soundtrack is not particularly memorable but it does its job well, blending nicely with the emotions of the scenes; and the performances of the lead actors, Cuba Gooding jr as Brashear and Robert De Niro as Sunday, are of the highest level.

Men of Honor is a great film. I remember seeing it when it was released, and Cuba Gooding, Jr. as the lead turned in a top-notch performance.

The Ghost and the Darkness is another excellent film, more inspired than based on Patterson's memoir The Man-Eaters of Tsavo, which is an excellent book and well worth reading.

I've got The Man-Eaters of Tsavo but I've yet to read it. Remington was my favourite character of the movie but he did not exist in reality (funny thing is that I had a strange, while good, feeling about his speeches; years later I realized his latinspanish voice actor was the same one who does Goku's voice)
