Coco is an animated movie released in the year 2017 with a runtime of 105 minutes.
Coco movie revolves around a 12-year-old boy named Miguel—from a family of shoemakers (The Riveras) in Mexico, who dared to have high dreams of becoming a musician. However, music was forbidden in his family for generations after a painful betrayal in the past.
Mama Imelda, Miguel's great great grand-mother, was married to Héctor and they had a child named Coco, who was (Miguel's great-grandmother).
One day, Coco’s father followed his dreams of becoming a musician and never returned, this broke Mama Imelda's heart deeply. She then banned anything music and learned the art of shoemaking so she could provide for herself and her daughter.
While the ban was upheld across many generations, the family shoemaking business expanded largely. But Miguel loved music so much and decided to pursue his dreams even if his family disapproved of it.
On Día de los Muertos (the Day of the Dead) , Miguel accidentally transported to the Land of the Dead while trying to steal his great-great grandfather's guitar in a mausoleum for a music performance. In the Land of the Dead, he met with his family who had been long dead, but he needed the blessings of his great great grandfather who was a famous musician, to return to the living world and live his dream of becoming a musician. But along the way, Miguel solved a puzzle that had caused conflict in the family for generations.
It was discovered that Coco's father didn't leave his family of his own will. He was poisoned by his supposed friend—Ernesto de la Cruz.
Héctor and his friend were aspiring musicians who travelled together performing Héctor’s songs, but Héctor missed his family so much and wanted to return to them, abandoning their musical journey but Ernesto poisoned him so he could steal his songs and achieve fame.
With this long hidden secret unraveled, Miguel discovered that his true great great grandfather was Héctor and the person he adored so much was Héctor and not Ernesto(because Ernesto was a song thief and a murderer), Mama Imelda forgave and reunited with her husband (Héctor) even in the Land of the Dead and Miguel returned to the living world, opening the eyes of his family to the truth.
I really love the message of bringing people together through music and those influences that could shape the lives of people.
I see Miguel as a very determined kid who dared to follow his dreams even in the midst of great opposition and that makes him one awesome kid in this movie, because many have fallen by the wayside instead of creating positive changes that would affect the society, being unable to fulfill their God-given purpose as a result of oppositions from others. I found that quite thought-provoking.
Music is central to the storyline, the songs were pleasant and easy to listen to, almost relaxing and gives out very classical feels, especially with two memorable, melodious and major songs—"Remember me" and "Poco loco".
Rating is a Solid 5/5 because of its stunning visuals and meaningful messages, blending heartfelt emotions, humor and music.
