Solid Scriptwriting Lessons to learn for Spiderman: No way Home

So finally the day arrived when we all friends were ready to relish the best childhood memories we had about Spidey and his gang of Villains. Believe me Spider Man: No way Home was a movie which single handedly beat the expectations which were created after watching Avengers Infinity War and Endgame. Warning for all those who have not seen the movie yet, Heavy Spoilers ahead.

In both the Avengers movies we saw something which was never shown on the big screen. All the favorite Superhero Characters come together to defeat the strongest villain in the world. These superhero characters are present in the same universe. We have seen them one by one and we know they are from one universe. But incase of Spiderman, the picture is completely different. Instead of one villain attacking here all the villains from the different universes unite to destroy the friendly neighborhood Spider Man. And instead of all heroes coming together here all the Spideys (Same character) from different universes unite to defeat the villains in the movie.

OMG!!! The hype was huge and so was the film. There is a lot to learn from the movie for each and every person in the cinema industry. There is much to learn from actors like Alfred Molina or William Defoe as even after so many years have passed out since their last representation of respective villains, they have not lost their touch. Really superb and power pack performances by all the actors. The movie is excellent in sound designing, VFX, direction, cinematography and more but the movie is actually well written and presented. Kudos to the scriptwriters of the movies. There is lot to learn here and we are going to decode it one by one-

1. Interesting Plot

One of the core elements of any script, movie, series is a plot of a Story. The Spiderman No way Home Plot is quite different from the plots we have seen earlier in MCU. Basic Idea of any plot is always the same where a character wants to reach his/her aim but there are obstacles/challenges in between. Here also Peter Parker has the goal where his life gets normal as his identity is revealed and now life is a mess. Now he decides to go to Dr. Strange to get some help. Strange helps him but there are consequences to it. So the whole movie is based on this plot and it is quite good to watch. To some extent this plot is quite similar to FlashPoint of the DC Universe but in a different manner.

2. Strong Inciting Incidents

So to start with the real thing there has to be an event which will take a turn and make the movie interesting. This event is called the Inciting Incident which will keep us hooked into the story. In this movie the entry of Dr. Octopus can be considered an inciting incident which not only hooks us up but also takes us to the nostalgia as this Octopus is from the Riamy version of Spider Man. It is like OMG!!!!!!. We literally feel like this is how every movie should take a twist. Second Inciting Incident is where William Defoe's Green Goblin backstab Tom's Peter Parker and creates havoc and then we come to know that Tom's Peter is in heavy trouble and Tobey and Andrew's Spideys are needed to help him in this critical situation. The havoc was introduced in a smooth manner where Tom's Peter senses something not good and then finds the culprit which is Goblin. Seriously man this film is really up and up and up and up to the mark.

3. Perfect Character Introduction and Development

Whether it's a villain from Riami or TASM versions or whether it is Tobey or Andrew, introduction to each and every character in the movie is a justice to the character. First solid intro is made by Dr. Octopus and he could be considered as the strongest villain keeping physical and mental aspects in mind. Yes he has mechanical arms, he has that solid villainous approach and he also is a smart guy. We can see the same approach in William Defoe's Green Goblin but Goblin is more cunning or deceitful than Dr. Octopus as mentioned above we see in the middle that Goblin is the one to heat things up with Spiderman and change the minds of villains to evil except lizard as he was never a good guy. So a solid introduction to Octopus and scary or creepy introduction to Goblin. Best way to start a movie. We also got introduced to Electro, Lizard and Sandman in the way they should be introduced. The Lizard character was not as famous as others in the list so marvel directly introduced him into the prison chamber of Strange. Electro on the other hand was a dominant villain due to his superpower and Jamie Foxx has performed very well. So quite a good intro. Third strongest character after Dr. Octopus and Green Goblin. One villain which all were confused about was SandMan from the Riami version. In the trailer he was standing toe to toe with lizard and electro. That confusion was solved in the movie when he got introduced to helping Tom's Spider Man as he in his last appearance was on good terms with Spidey. At last the time came for the legendary segment in the movie where we get introduced to Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. OMG!!!! Let me tell you, they were not at all introduced with boom and bash but in the simplest manner ever the hero is introduced. This is quite similar to Thanos getting introduced in Infinity War where he is just saying a dialogue and he appears. It was simple but deep and intense. Same way here these two Spideys appear in manner but the introductions are quite intense. Maybe it is due to nostalgia that is enough to get chills and we do not need any kind of boom and bash and action to get these two introduced.

Honorary Mention is the scene where Tom's Spidey gets introduced to Andrew and Tobey's Spiderman. They both act like a father figure to him and make him feel better and advise him not to give up on the situation. Even the scenes where all villains and Dr. Strange or all Spideys and Dr. Strange are in one frame are classic scenes and were a dream come true movements.

And we also get to see one more famous hero character which created a lot of hype. He was in the frame for a couple of minutes but his introduction was quite strong. He was none other than Matt Murdock A.K.A Daredevil!!!!!! His cameo is quite small but made a strong impact in the movie. We could see more of him as Kingpin was also introduced in the Hawkeye series.

4. Detailed Action Sequences

If you closely look at fight sequences between Spiderman and Green Goblin or Spider Man vs Dr. Octopus, you will find that the style matches with the one in original Riami movies. Green Goblin vs Tom's Peter in the apartment was purely an old school fight. Same with the last battle between the both. Even Spidey vs Octopus was one of the best fights which took us to 2004 film action sequences where there is a heavy use of Metal Arms of Octopus. The Last Battle sequence was something which was beyond imagination where 3 Spidermans come together to fight 5 different villains in a perfect location. This is the only movie where we see different types of fights like a classic Old School Hand to Hand Fight, a Technology vs Technology Fight, Super Power vs Super Power, Magic vs Normal Human and so on. In all these fights we come to know that maybe our friendly neighborhood Spiderman is the only hero who can give a tussle to any kind of Villain. That's quite a silent portrayal of why he should be the most favorite hero of all generations. Kudos to all Spideys.

5. Justifiable farewell to the Characters

One thing I really like in the movie is the emotional ends the movie has given to all the main characters in it. All villains were cured at the end and sent back to where they came from. This was really awesome to watch as no villain in the movie except Lizard to some extent has become a villain with his own will. Everybody had their own reasons. So to cure them was definitely on the hit list of any spider man they have faced till now. And we got it at the end where Spideys were able to create a cure for all and provide the same to all. Last battle sequence between Green Goblin and Tom's Spidey is also a classic example of the end to the rivalry. The fight was purely old school with no human or power interruptions. Tobey coming to rescue Tom from becoming a killer was a very emotional moment in itself. It was a perfect Farewell to Goblin Character as well. Now coming to Spideys from another universe. Yes their journey also ended in the best possible way. Tom's Peter and Hugging Andrew and Tobey and they both giving a farewell was clearly a Passing the Torch Movement.

6. New beginning of the Protagonist

In the end we also see a proper completion of Tom's Peter Parker's Arc. In the end Peter is just a random struggling nobody cares kind of a guy. This character is quite similar to Riami's Peter Parker in Spider Man 2 and Spider Man 3 where he is portrayed as a struggling guy who the world doesn't care about at all. MCU's Peter is also in the same boat now but too much sorrow to his side as he also lost his only aunt who used to believe in him. Now nobody is there to believe in him, to take care of him or to hear his problems, sorrows etc. He is completely alone. It's quite amazing to see that a guy started with a bang where he was supported by the most powerful hero Iron Man and he had all the support from Aunt May, Pepper Pots, Happy Hogan, MJ and his best friend Ned and even Dr. Strange till this movie but now he lost everybody. Some are dead and some don't remember him. That's how life is and we have to accept it and move on. So a new journey has started and we as fans are very much excited to see where this all leads to.
