Written by Obadoni Bridaniels Wealth, casting director as Uchenna Mbunabo (also as co-producer), directed by Tissy Nnachi and Executively Produced by Uche Montana (also starring as Nkem), is this movie titled “MORE THAN MARRIAGE” with a runtime of exactly 2hours.
ABOUT THE MOVIE ... may include spoilers
Nkem (Uche Montana) and Tobi (Ray Emodi) are a couple, but things aren’t particularly rosy in the home. Nkem is suspicious of all the maids that come to work for them that she ends up firing each of them at the slightest hint of a foul play.
She believes that her husband isn’t faithful and becomes obsessed with being a watchdog over her man. This continues to the frustration of Tobi’s until an event changes the narrative.
What event happened? What did Tobi do? What was Nkem’s role or reaction in it?
MY THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS
This movie successfully made it to the list of movies that have made me upset in recent times. It had prospects! Oh yes, it did! With great acts like Ray Emodi, Uche Montana herself, and the Instagram sensation Sophia Chisom (a.k.a. Soso), what a waste of talents, I dare say! No offense whatsoever, though!
While the story appeared to have been targeted at giving some married women a re-awakening (even though it isn’t exactly a new one being that it’s been overly used), it however still managed to get lost in its plot and direction.
Not only did this film fail in its approach, but it echoed or passed a weak message in a rather weak manner too. One we can call a misconception or misplaced belief in the home front.
Although some women fall into this category of requiring a change in attitude in their marriages, the generalisation that the success of a home lies on the woman in this film doesn’t quite look good especially in this modern day and age where marriage is seemingly under serious attack.
The most annoying part of the direction of this film is that for a runtime of 2hours which wasn’t necessary to begin with, the entire show, as in, the whole film was shot in one location with only five or so minutes in a car with two of the actors driving to a destination which later ended up back to the parent location(the couple’s house).
Now, this isn’t suppose to be a bad concept if it was worth it as I’ve seen some movies like the one shot during lockdown of 2020 with Hollywood actress Zendaya with another actor filmed in a glass house. That…that was an intense thriller!
This particular movie, in view, did not have that substance , nor does its genre of being a drama warrant the use of one location, but here, viewers are subjected to a bore of tiring back and forths.
Another irk for me in this movie is its plot! Did the couple not date enough for the man to know his wife’s weakness in the kitchen? There were inconsistencies in establishing this…confusing if I may add. Everything just felt all over the place
What in the world of an irritating sight was that blood stain in the car for? Of what relevance was it to the plot? Like, was that necessary?
Don’t even get me started on the title, which beforehand had raised my interest, gave me high hopes only to dash them on the floor like shattered glass on marbles. What exactly was “more than marriage” in this film? Please, you be the judge! Enlighten me.
Now, for a woman who is so protective of her man, please make it make sense that she continually endlessly denies him of his conjugal rights. Was this a tool to avoid romantic scenes in the film? Oh, please spare me! There are a thousand and one ways to go about that!
What kind of job does Nkem do that she would constantly require a maid in the house? We don’t know! Or did I miss it? What does Tobi do for a living to pay off a maid with 200k instantly after she got her severance check from her madam? It wasn’t clear either!
In all honesty, the score above, after the first half of the movie had drastically dropped to an all time low till it sluggishly rose up to that final rating as a result of an outcome I patiently waited for which didn’t make much sense afterwards either. So don’t say I didn’t try my best! I did! Oh, I did!
If this was meant to be a dramedy (comedy drama), perhaps a shorter duration of say 1hour 30minutes or thereabouts would have saved everyone the drag, because, at the end of the day, the repetitive dialogues mumbled up the overall message so much so that its meaning or message got lost in transit.
The editing for the opening and closing parts of the film was good ( I love the concept). Picture quality was nice but can’t say the same of the audio. The first scene turned out chaotically awkward.
Conclusively, see, as with everything else, while this movie didn’t do it for me, it may, however, be someone else’s best movie of the year (happy days).
Acting was good, but the plot and direction were a meal for a massive dose of eye-rolling fiesta, in my opinion.
Rating : 3/10
