I recently saw the movie Agora, a 2009 production that poses a conflict between science and religion. The plot is set in the north of ancient Egypt, a society that at the time coexisted science, faith and pagan beliefs (Christianity, Judaism and religious magical thinking).
However, the decline of the Roman Empire brought these currents and visions of life into confrontation. In this sense, the director of the film proposes the agora as a symbol, as a space for dialogue and encounter.
The main character of the film tells the story of Hypatia, a renowned philosopher and astronomer who sought truth through science. Her interest in the study of philosophy led her to become an enemy of the empire.
Faced with confrontations between Christians and Jews, the empire imposed a single form of faith to avoid clashes. Hypatia opposed to receive the Christian faith and was stoned as a heretic in the headquarters of the library of Alexandria, destroyed by the Christians as a result of the conflict.
The film shows us the decadence of the Roman Empire that succumbs to religious fanaticism. Likewise, the violence and inequality to which women were subjected, confronting a social system governed by men, the hostility between Jews and Christians and the interests of politics versus religion.
It is undoubtedly a film that is still relevant and allows us to take a closer look at the resurgence of religious fanaticism that in the past led society into chaos.

Recientemente vi la película Ágora, una producción del año 2009 que plantea un conflicto entre la ciencia y la religión. La trama se desarrolla al norte del antiguo Egipto, una sociedad que para la época convivian la ciencia, la fe y las creencias paganas (el cristianismo, el judaismo y el pensamiento mágico religioso).
Sin embargo, la decadencia del imperio romano llevo a estas corrientes y visiones de la vida a confrontarse. En este sentido, el director de la película propone como símbolo el ágora, como espacio de diálogo y encuentro
El personaje principal de la película cuenta la historia de Hipatía una reconocida filósofa y astrónoma que buscaba la verdad a través de la ciencia. Su interés en el estudio de la filosofía, la llevó a convertirse en una enemiga del imperio.
Ante las confrontaciones entre cristianos y judíos, el imperio impuso una sola forma de fe para evitar los enfrentamientos. Hipatía se opuso a recibir la fe cristiana y fue apedreada como una hereje en la sede de la biblioteca de Alejandria, destruida por los cristianos como consecuencia del conflicto.
La película nos deja ver la decadencia del imperio romano que sucumbe ante el fanatismo religioso. Asimismo, la violencia y desigualdad a la que era sometidas las mujeres que confrontaban un sistema social gobernado por hombres, la hostilidad entre judíos y cristianos y los intereses de la política frente a la religión.
Sin duda es una película que sigue vigente y que nos permite mirar más de cerca el resurgimiento de fanatismos religiosos que en un pasado llevaron a la sociedad a un caos.
