When it comes to TV series I am very picky. I usually prefer to watch series like Spartacus, GOT, The Boys, Marvel TV series and anything that has a lot of action. You wouldn't catch me watching anything that has a lot of drama.
One night while I was browsing for something to watch on Netflix. I stumbled upon Girls from Ipanema. The title caught my attention relating it to the bossa nova song "Girl from Ipanema" (I am a sucker for Bossa Nova Music).
As I read thru the description
It is about a wife in the late 1950's setting who went to Rio de Janeiro. Discovering that her husband has left her. Decided to stay in Rio to open a club with live Bossa Nova Music.
This TV series cheated me by using Bossa Nova music. I was like a fish caught by the lure and there is no escaping it. I need to see this.
The series has been running for 2 seasons now which started in 2019. I can't imagine why I haven't heard about this series. Season 3 is getting ready to be released on June 18, 2021.
Because of that, I need to finish the first 2 seasons as soon as I can.
Season 1 has 7 episodes and right now I am on the 5th episode.
The series has completely taken me over. Beautiful locations in Rio during the 1950s era and you will see a lot of the beach. The color editing is visually stimulating as it will give you that feeling of beautiful nostalgia and will just take your breath away. I am amazed at the color grading that they used. Seeing it has inspired me to do a photoshoot with the 1950's theme and maybe try to figure out the color grading they used here.
I have noticed that some scenes have lens flare which I love. I do not see a lot of movies or series these days that have video editing like this. The setting is old but it feels so fresh.
Even the costumes used here seem like there is always a photoshoot that is about to happen.
The series focuses on the struggle of Maria Casadevall (Malu) on being independent. It shows how hard it is to follow your dreams even without support. Meeting new and old friends along the way. The Bossa Nova songs here are intoxicating and play a major part in the series. If you are familiar with Bossa you will enjoy the songs.
I will not spoil anything for you and you just need to see it for yourself.
If you love the sun, the beach, Rio, beautiful locations, that 50's vibe, a few sex scenes (I am not sure if there will be more along the way), and bossa nova.
This TV series is for you and now I will leave you to watch another episode.
Before I forget the original language is in Portuguese. I suggest you to watch it in Portuguese the get the full experience of Brazil. Adeus!
That sounds like one I would like! I'll take a look. 😊
Oh you definitely need to check it out. You will love it.
