Kill Boksoon is a 2023 action thriller Korean movie about Gil Boksoon, an assassin who works for Cha Min-Kyu's M.K. Ent. Gil Boksoon, AKA Kill Boksoon, is renowned for great skills that make killing look so easy.
But you know what's hard for her? Being a single mother to a closeted lesbian teenager.
Cha Min-Kyu, the chairman, holds respect for Gil as a fellow experienced killer—unlike his sister, who helps him run the company and detests Gil Boksoon with all her guts. Gil Boksoon and Cha Min-Kyu don’t just have a perfect killing record in common but also an interesting history.
Gil Boksoon is also sexually involved with Han Hee-Sung, a co-worker who, along with some others, has stagnant career progress.
At the end of her contract, the chairman tries persuading her to renew it as the best assassin. However, Gil Boksoon is considering not renewing, as she believes her job is getting in the way of being a good parent.
She is assigned to a show (assassination contract) with a student that some consider the upcoming new Killer Boksoon. But the show happens to be a sensitive job she is unwilling to fulfill. Gil Boksoon breaks the company's rule, and everything escalates into a whole lot of bullets, slashes, violence, and blood.
This movie had top-notch fight scenes. They had the complete spice—realistic, brutal, and stylish.
I have two fight scenes that got me hooked.
The first was the very first scene. The movie starts with Gil Boksoon on a job, and she gives the man a chance for a fair fight. But when she realizes she doesn't have much chance or time to win, she cheats and kills him.
Yeah, I love the fact she cheated. I mean, a person who kills suddenly having morals to give the opponent a fair chance and ending up losing in the name of fairness is not realistic.
The second scene was the fight in the restaurant. It was action-packed, and somehow, some scenes made me laugh—like the bad luck of the one-handed guy or the student who chose Gil Boksoon’s side because she knew Boksoon had a higher chance of winning.
The scene showed the nature of every living thing, including humans—the number one rule: survival.
Another standout moment is the standoff between Boksoon and her mentor, Cha Min-Kyu. The tension in their fight isn’t just physical—it’s emotional, as all their years of trust and betrayal come to the surface. This blend of raw emotion and expertly choreographed combat is what makes Kill Boksoon more than just an action film—it’s a character-driven thriller.
I give all the actors a salute for their performances. But Jeon Do-Yeon was exceptional. The fight and emotions of the character were embodied and displayed perfectly. But there is one thing that stood out—she had this spark of craziness in her eyes. She kept that selfish, unhinged aura intact.
Unlike other action movies that focus solely on adrenaline-pumping fights, Kill Boksoon blends action with emotions and character depth.
I was able to understand Gil Boksoon—the feeling of being pulled in different directions. She wasn't just a cold-blooded killer; she had every emotion that drove her decisions.
Would I recommend it?
Absolutely. Whether you’re a fan of martial arts movies or looking for a film that blends action with emotional depth, Kill Boksoon delivers on all fronts.
