Water is very important to us. Neither animals nor plants can survive without water. That is a good reason why we need to save water and not waste it.
- Can you remember ways in which we can save water?
- Watch the video for extra information.
Every day we use water in our lives and we enjoy swimming and playing in it. But water can be dangerous.
It does not look dangerous, but remember we are not fish and we cannot breathe under water, which means we can drown.
A person or animal can drown in less than a minute and it only takes a little water to get into your lungs to make you drown. We need to be very careful if we are in or around water in order to stay save.
- In which places do you come in contact with water?
- Why do you think it is important to be responsible around water?
Lets have a look at some safety rules when we are in or around water.
If you are at home
- do not use electricity close to water, you can shock if the water gets in contact with electricity
- keep your electrical appliances away from water - do not sit in the bath and use a hairdryer or put your heater in the bathroom
- do not leave buckets of water standing around unattended - a small child or animal can fall into it and drown
- if you open the tap in the bathroom or kitchen do not walk away - you can forget and then it will overflow and if the floor is wet you can slip and fall
- if you are going to take a bath, tell an adult that they can make sure you are fine if you stay in there for a long time
- do not stand up in the bath or jump around, because you can fall and hit your head
- if you are finish bathing, take out the plug - we do not want to leave the water in there and someone or something can fall into the bath full of water
The next few rules are for how to be save at the river or dam and when you are at the pool.
- In the previous part I gave you reasons why you must or must not do certain things. Look at the following safety rules and give a reason why each one is a good rule or say what can happen if you are not careful and obey these rules.
When you are at the river or dam
- use a long stick to try and see how deep the dam is
- before you cross the river, make sure how strong the current is
- protect your feet from litter and broken glass or sharp rocks
- if you go out on a boat make sure you wear a life jacket
When you are at the pool
- if there is a gate to the swimming pool keep it closed
- do not swim without adult supervision
- be careful if you dive into the swimming pool
- obey the pool rules
- do not run around the pool
- do not eat or drink while swimming
