I want us to take a good look at this scenario.
Imagine that a teacher decided to teach multiplication table to her students, she has been trying to make them understand it in last one week. All students seems to have gotten it except two.
He gave up and consoled herself with this "If 18 out of 20 student grasp this, i am not the problem." She went further and said this to make herself feel happier "these kids must be dumb!"
During a staff meeting, she was proud of her achievement and how 90% of students grasp the concept of multiplication table. The head teacher in his wisdom suggested that she should use dominos to teach the other kids.
She gave it an attempted. Boom! It worked like magic. Supposed dumb kids became multiplication table guru in 48 hours.
Surprisingly, all the kids fell in love with dominos in her mathematics class. They can't wait anymore to have the next maths class.
Question
Who is really dumb in this situation?
The teacher or other two students?
Wait....
I really care less about who is dumb, my point is that this millennium require different teaching technique.
A teacher is not supposed to teach students how she prefer to learn. Rather, she should teach them how they love to learn it. The students are coming from diverse backgrounds with different brain capacities.
It is important that you empower yourself with relevant teaching skills that will enable you to meet classroom education needs of all students.
Remember, your job is not to meet learning need of 90%, you have to ensure success of 100% of your students!
The job of a 21st century teacher is huge, you have to love what you do and have passion for it. Trust me, you will find fulfilment in it.
