We all know that older people need to be respected. Honor and attention, courtesy and willingness to help an elderly person can only characterize anyone from the best side. And how to teach a young child to respect elders?
Nowadays, the opinion can often be heard that children do not know how to respect the older generation. That is why incidents of teenagers refusing to yield to elderly people on public transportation, failing to help their grandmother cross the street, and sometimes simply being impolite to their elders have been become quite common nowadays. But this does not mean at all that such children have a spoiled temperament from birth. They were simply not explained how to behave in such situations and did not set the right example. Almost all the peoples of the world have many traditions, customs and simple proverbs that they prescribe to honor the older generation.
- Show respect by example
The most important thing to remember: young children take their parents' behavior as the basis for almost everything. Therefore, a personal example by which you will demonstrate how to treat elders respectfully than you will bring the best educational effect. And you have to start with your family. Don't let your child see you arguing with your parents or your husband/wife's parents.
- Help your child help their elders
But, of course, it's hard to teach a child just by your own example, no matter how good it is. Therefore, you should discuss with him more ways to respect, support and help older people, as well as actively involve him in all available ways. For example, not only do you give up your seat on the bus, but you offer your child to do so: “Would you like to get up or sit on my lap so Grandma can sit?” Well, if you see that the child is already trying to help others, encourage him in every possible way, mark him and praise him, that he is doing well and is doing very well.
So, in order to teach a child to respect elders, you need:
- Show a personal example;
- Explain why you need to do this and not some other way;
- Talk to him like an adult, take his opinion into account;
- Do not scandalize the members of the house in his presence.
