Agu,the washerman once went to the bank of the Niger river to wash clothes. He had just finished his work when a tall man came up to him.
'This is your only chance to become rich', he said to Agu pointing to the deep blue river. 'I am the messenger of the powerful mermaid,the richest goddess who lives over there. Give me the money you have with you now and i will double it right away'.
The doubler spoke so fluently and convincingly that Agu believed all he said. 'But i have only two hundred naira here', he replied.
'That will do, a trial will convince you,' said the doubler. Agu then handed over the two hundred naira to him.
The 'messenger' at once started to call on the mermaid while running forward and backwards.Then he put the money into an iron container, carefully lowered it into the shallow part of the river,ans knelt down and prayed. Finally ,he brought out four hundred naira from the container and handed the sum over to Agu and smiled.
'Wonderful!' shouted Agu happily as he received and examined the money. 'All good, no counterfeit! Surely,dear messenger of the goddess this is the happiest day of my life.
