Education and pandemic adverse: effects on students

in Education3 years ago

Abstract

This paper relates the pandemic caused by Cobit 19 with such important effects as education, especially the adverse effects that this virus has had and its direct and indirect effects on students, most of whom have been affected since certain aspects have arisen that have to do with the teaching and learning process, where many teachers who have set aside their criteria and debate, even without taking full advantage of technological tools, are questioned. In addition to this we find the scenario that many students do not have enough resources to have the necessary technological tools in their hands and that many parents do not have enough capacity to manipulate.

The consequences caused by the pandemic of covid 19 are well known by the world society, however in the educational field it is necessary to open the debate since the family is one of the most affected. The problem crosses borders of all countries in all continents since its cause is the virus that currently affects humanity. For the time that the pandemic has so far its negative effects in different homes have to do with many aspects that so far have not been overcome.

In this sense I must emphasize that the educational system of many Latin American countries and even the whole world was not prepared to face the effects caused by this pandemic, which as we should all know, goes beyond the health issue and has allowed those in charge of education in different countries to have to adapt suddenly, following educational guidelines and policies focused on distance learning whose impact has not ceased to be felt in the family nuclei of different societies.

In this order of ideas I will begin by making a constructive criticism to the great majority of teachers, not all but many of them who have been dedicated to simply send activities to students without the minimum opportunity to communicate with them to comment, reflect, socialize, debate, agree, recommend and get involved with their students, thus disassociating themselves from their ethics and commitment as a teacher, educator and trainer of citizens for the new generations, also, wasting all the opportunities that current technological tools offer them.
This behavior of many teachers has a direct impact on the performance of the student at home, who was not prepared for the effects of the pandemic, where almost one hundred percent of the students had not experienced what distance education represents, which includes in the first place the imperative need to have a computer, cell phone, tablet or any technological tool, and generally in countries in crisis or with low resources, the vast majority of students do not have these tools.

But beyond these, the common student needs at a given moment some orientation according to the activity assigned to him/her. At this point is where the teacher's or professor's criteria is lacking, being the father or mother the one to fulfill this role, and a very high percentage does not have the necessary pedagogical strategies to address the great contents assigned by the teachers to their respective students. By this I do not mean that parents are not prepared to guide their children, I mean that they do not have adequate pedagogical strategies for this purpose.
In addition, we must recognize that many parents fulfill different functions at home in their jobs in their daily loads and that leaves them with little time to devote to their children.

To sum it up, many parents spend time with their children in the evenings, generating a problem for the student since the tiredness and stress of the day is taken to an educational environment at home which generates a level of stress and in its effect hinders the learning process.

On the other hand, in my experience among family members and my own students I have noticed that the father does not fulfill the role of educator nor does he support his son in the learning process, but rather he does for the student the activities ordered by the teachers without leaving any knowledge to his son. This means that what should have been an orientation becomes the construction of a poorly educated student, without an objective and effective continuous teaching and learning process that leaves sequels and traces and that will probably take its toll later on when the student is in a higher grade and does not demonstrate the adequate and necessary competencies to be in that grade.

Now it is worth mentioning that there are many families whose students, beyond not having the technological tools to reinforce the activities and to communicate with their teachers, have found great support in their parents, being the parents the people in charge of supervising and guiding their children to the world of knowledge and knowledge, dedicated parents who have been able to lead their children in these two years of pandemic.

Now, having already talked about the teacher and the student as well as the parents, I would like to give a personal point of view in my experience.

This change was so sudden that it did not give us the opportunity to adapt in an effective way but dear teacher friends I want to share my message with you and leave my grain of sand to this great community.

I know that it has not been easy at first to adapt to new modalities that allow us to neglect many aspects. In leaving our old teaching strategies and learning and adapting to new learning strategies but I know that we have improved and that after overcoming this pandemic we will have many more strategies than the ones we had now we just have to improve and commit ourselves to educate our children and adolescents for the future. To create a citizen with values is on our part, remember that our classes should not only be directed to our students but also to their parents, so that together we can accomplish this beautiful task.

I also wanted in this post to thank all my readers and I would love to open a discussion thread in the comments on this topic.

And I can't say goodbye without thanking two great collaborators such as @canadian-coconut from #familyprotection and @ocdb. Who have encouraged me to continue with my posts.

Thank you community.

This topic is interesting, many parents make the mistake of educating the child with practices that have no basis in the educational system in general. That is why it is important to clarify and advise parents for the preparation of most education in times of Covid. How always a great learning here, it is a pleasure to read you again Leo.

Sure my dear @pavanjr. Remember that our society was not prepared for a pandemic. Although the risk was always latent...
