Getting the kids out of the house for 15 hours sounds incredible. There are too many nervous parents for that sort of thing to happen now. I expect the proliferation of TVs might be complicit. Anytime anything bad happens anywhere, they get to see it in HD and hear about it in stereo.
Skews our risk tolerance and means a 15 hour absence is now a nerve-wracking ordeal.

I think living in Sellicks Beach during the 80's had something to do with it too. Not many people lived down there then - was a fairly tight knit community. Not infallible, but certainly easier to trust people than in a more populated community.
