There is a generic phrases even my Dad uses it quite often in Hindi which says : "ghar ki murgi daal barabar" in english it tranlates to "the chicken at home is like lentils". It means that we tend to undervalue what we have and overvalue what we don't. The idiom highlights the human tendency to take for granted what is readily available and familiar, often leading to a lack of appreciation for it while desiring things that are perceived as better or more desirable elsewhere. In the same context, the Sanskrit says :
प्रत्यक्ष कवि काव्यं च रूपं च कुलयोषितः
गृहवैद्यस्य विद्या न कस्मैचित्यति रोचते.
Pratyaksh kavi kaavyam cha roopam cha kulayoshitah.
Gruhavaidyasya vidyaa na kasmaichityati rochate.
Pratyaksh = any thing directly in front, contemporary.
Kavi = poet.
Kaavya = poetry.
Roopam = beauty.
Kulayoshitah = one's own wife,
Kula= family.
Yoshita = wife.
Gruh = house.
Vaidya = a person practicing Indian system of Medicine
Gruhavaidya = a family doctor or vaidya.
Kasmai = ever.
Chityati = minds,appreciates.
Chitta = mind.
Rochate = liked , appreciated.
The poetry of a contemporary and easily available poet, the beauty of one's own wife, and the family doctor's expertise in treating diseases, is hardly ever appreciated and liked by people.
The underlying idea behind these lines is that any thing that is easily available does not get the recognition and appreciation that it deserves. People often tend to ignore the quality of these close ones and looks out for others.
