It was another beautiful autumn day. Mouse was hanging out with Goldie today. They were just having a laugh when Mouse heard someone crying. His ears perked up and he listened, who could be that sad. Mouse then followed the cries. It came from the old oak tree near the fish pond. Mouse looked up to see Mrs. Swallow sitting on a branch crying.
Concerned Mouse asked her: “Is everything okay Mrs. Swallow?” She then stopped and looked down to the ground to see who was talking to her. She saw it was Mouse, and flew down to the ground beside him. “Mouse, my son got taken today” she cried again. Mouse continued “Taken where Mrs. Swallow?” In between cries she told Mouse the whole story. a Boy managed to catch her son, Swift, in a bird trap earlier and he's now kept in a cage in the dining room. Mouse felt sad with her. But he soon realised he can't just ignore the cry for help, when he knows he can probably help. Mouse comforted Mrs. Swallow and told her he'll help rescue Swift. Mrs. Swallow was so grateful that Mouse is going to help her.
Mouse then left for his home to think of a plan. That night just as Mouse closed the door to his tree stump home Sunni the firefly arrived. “I'm here Mouse, just as you asked” he greeted.
Mouse greeted him back and put on his back pack. Just then Roamer, the mouse loving cat, arrived to give them a ride. He heard about the rescue and asked tooth mouse the night off to help Mouse. The home where Swift, the swallow, was being held was four farms down. The boy who lived there is known for capturing all kinds of critters. Every one avoided that farm house, but, some had to test fate. They then set off on Roamer’s back. What awaits them they don't know, but what they do know is Swift’s mom is depending on them. When they finally arrived at the house a while later, Mouse saw that all was quiet. Like he hoped, they were all fast asleep.
Roamer waited for them underneath an old broken window, while Mouse and Sunni entered the house through the window. When they were inside Mouse looked around, then realised they were in the laundry room. Sunni used his light as they sneaked around. They soon spotted the door that led to the kitchen and the rest of the house. Upon entering the kitchen they spotted the first problem, a big old ginger cat sleeping on one of the chairs at the kitchen table.
Mouse knew they had to be extra carefull and be as quiet as they can be. Carefully they made their way through the kitchen without waking the big old ginger. When they entered the dining room. Sunni spotted it first. It was Swift in a bird cage, hanging from the ceiling fast asleep. Mouse noticed he was very high up. Figuring out a way to reach Swift Sunni already saw a solution. He showed Mouse there were shelves reaching all the way to the top. On the top shelf, hanging all the way down to the ground, was a potted plant. Mouse started to climb the plant all the way to the top. Sunni flew up ahead, and waited till Mouse joined him. When Mouse reached the top, he took the rope out of his backpack. Sunni took one side and flew the rope over to the cage and tied that end to the cage right in front of the door. Then he woke Swift up quietly not to scare him. When Swift saw help arrived, he was so happy. He kept quiet waiting for Mouse.
Mouse tied the other part of the rope to a whole in the wooden shelf, then prepared himself to walk across to the cage. The rope swung a bit but Sunni flew beside him and encouraged him. Mouse saw it was a bamboo cage, so lifting the door open for Swift to fly out won't be too hard.
They were so busy they hadn't noticed the old tabby had awoken and was slowly stalking his way right to them. The old tabby started jumping the shelves, criss-crossing between the shelves. Mouse lifted the door just as Swift flew out. The old ginger tabby cat jumped for the cage. Mouse was falling to the ground, but Swift was fast enough to scoop Mouse up before cat and cage could hit the ground. They hid immediately behind big old china plates on another shelf. The loud noise woke the whole household and the lights flickered on in the living room, where cat and cage laid on the ground. There were feathers stuck in the old tabby’s fur near his mouth. Thinking he ate the bird they scolded him. They let him outside and cleaned up the mess. The boy was looking around but found nothing.
Mouse and his friends kept as quiet as they could, staying hidden. They watched safely on top of the shelf as the people scurried to clean. After all the excitement they switched off the lights, went to their rooms. Mouse and the others still waited a bit before leaving the safety of their hiding place. When they were sure it's safe, they left the house and met up with Roamer. Later that morning Mouse sat on his porch satisfied. What a reunion it was when Mrs. Swallow and Swift were back together and could leave that very morning for their winter migration.
Having friend's who help each other in times of need are rare. Knowing you need friends to help, like Roamer and Sunni helped him to rescue Swift. Swift learned there are reasons why friends and parents tell you no for certain things. It is not to spoil your fun. It is to keep you safe. If Swift listened he wouldn’t have been caught.
