Your friend is ahead of the crowd! From my perspective there is no debate about if this works or not. The only debate I can see is how to make it safe for the operator, who must in fact be a certain kind of person. And a bit like it is for many other types of 'magic' (natural processes or technology we don't understand), belief is the very important first step.
