Playing With AI Spirit Birds: And Coming Across Banned Words in Midjourney

In this AI art series I'm exploring Australian birds, riffing off dear @mamrita's post on birds such as ravens and owls, and their spiritual essence. We've been talking alot about AI art and have been enjoying learning together and exploring various themes. I thought I'd try to get across an Australian feel to my bird photographs, and a sense of their spirit.

The first one is a yellow tailed black cockatoo, or at least it was meant to be. They make a beautiful sound, mournful and plaintive, and herald the rain, or calling raucously to each other. Sometimes I'm lucky enough to see them in the garden.

Except the AI did not like 'black cockatoo' - black cock is a banned phrase. I wish you could appeal such things as that's just ridiculous! So I had to change it up, writing 'BLACK yellow tailed cockatoo'. I'd already used the words 'strength of spirit' and 'rain' as they are associated with the black cockie. Try as I might, I could not get the exact bird, but something close - and quite beautiful too. I couldn't decide which one I liked best.

Next I thought I'd play with the blue fairy wren. The male wren always have a harem of ladies about them, real players. They're known for their promiscuity and unfaithfulness. No suprise that when I was playing with the prompt and putting in 'harem' and 'promiscuous' it wouldn't let me. In Midjourney, it can take a few goes to get what you want, and even then, sometimes it doesn't quite pull it off and no matter what prompts you get, it doesn't nail it. I tried to capture some of their playful energy in an Australian flower setting, but adding descriptors weren't helping at all and they started to look nothing like superb fairy wrens. Very cute, very energetic, very playful - but not the bird I know.

In the end, I tried to make it simple 'superb fairy wrens, photograph' but it still didn't quite nail it. I wanted tinges of red and pink to symbolise love and promiscuity but then the bird would change. I loved some of the images, but none were as instantly beautiful as the black cock yellow tailed black cockatoo.

Next is bunjil, the creator deity, commonly known as the wedgetailed eagle. To see one of these soaring high or close up on the side of the road is special indeed - you can't help but being awed by it.

Whilst it doesn't quite nail the bird exactly, the AI did capture some of it's breathtaking essence.

It's a very interesting learning experience, and quite incredible to see strange birds leap out of the AI like spirit creatures themselves. Perhaps the best capture of the Australian bird spirit is this song by Xavier Rudd.

I hope you enjoyed this exploration of some Australian spirit birds. I certainly did!

With Love,

If you want you can always use Stable DIffusion, that doesn't have banned words, though they're changing their policy to prevent too much graphic imagery.

Lovel colours!

Wonderful set. Too bad about the censoring. This is my least favorite part of AI Art. It's the 21st century and sexuality is still scaring people. The fairy wrens are majestic looking. The black c*cockatoos are mysterious and cool.

It's the 21st century and sexuality is still scaring people.

I guess it's just the devs protecting us from dickheads that would create gratuitous porn rather that exploring sexuality as such. Enough abuse of woman already. But I wouldn't want to be training an AI on porn either.

Yea, I understand the justification, particularly when it comes to children and violence against women. I don't agree with the whole women are being "objectified" trope of old. Too subjective and ripe for abuse by those who want to gate-keep sex.

Wawoo awesome 🤩🤩

Now you know what I'm talking about when it comes to censoring, it's so funny though with the black cockatoo, haha. The images are great though. But I don't really know what the actual birds look like 🙂

You'll have to Google them!!!!

Yes, I know. I was just a bit in a hurry yesterday.

Now I see what you mean, especially when it comes to blue fairy wren. The actual bird is so cute 🙂

Cool AI art. Its fun going along on this AI trip with you.

Thanks so much! I'm on holidays now so I'll slow down on that front 😂

As @edprivat said you can use Stable diffusion when you have such problems because some of the apps and tools using it have no banned words or less or completely diactevated that filter. If you like Midjourney, there is a version called Openjourney although I'm not sure about their banned words

These are so cool! But you absolutely had me rolling on the floor with laughter. What is this AI like? Seriously, hilarious! You can't ask for a black cockatoo 🤣🤣🤣I hope you don't get banned hehe. I love all the fun you are having here - such great exploration of the prompt descriptions. It really is such a cool thing to play with! !LUV !PIZZA !ALIVE
