Welcome to Your New Home: Transplanting Basil

Over a week ago, in my last garden update, I mentioned how my basil plants have coped up well in their outdoor set up. In just a matter of days, 4 to be exact, they showed great progress and grew their first set of real leaves.

Today, I am happy to share that they are thriving well. In fact, the second set of real leaves have started growing, too.

Time to transplant!

Some of them were sowed in small yogurt containers. Since my Little Helpers were the ones who put the seeds, I was not able to control how many they put, and some containers grew more than three sprouts. Of course, they are getting crowded in their small container and it's now time that they live independently.

I prepared the new pots, filled them with soil, and then started working with my Little babies.

I carefully scooped them out of each container, making sure that I do not damage any roots.

Since these containers aren't really big, I put one plant in each container. They are small water bottles that @kennyroy collected for this purpose. He meticulously cut each bottle top and bound them with wires.

Small water bottles repurposed as plant pots.

Careful with those babies!

To ensure that they will survive in their new home, I kept the roots wrapped with the soil from the original pot. At this point, even if they are already one month old, they are still relatively small. I guess, it is due to them not getting to their full growth potential when they were still indoors.

I guess owing to them being over-crowded in their old pots, the baby plants did not grow at the same pace. Some were already growing second set of real leaves, while some were still baby-ish.

Comfy at their new home.

Look at these babies!Very much at home and comfy. Hopefully, they will be healthier after this transplanting.

I have sowed a few more last week, and today, they are already showing a new set of leaves. So far, so good. Perhaps next week, I would need to start transplanting them, too.

Despite the slow start, I want to remain positive that these basil plants will still grow properly that I may harvest from them soon.

Gardening is a very relaxing activity. I am looking forward to the colder months when we will have more opportunity to grow a variety of plants.

How about you, how's the garden looking?
