Scientific Name of Oregano

The scientific name of oregano is origanum vulgare. It is a flowering plant in the mint family (Lamiaceae). Oregano is an herb and sometimes referred as to wild marjoram. It has purple flowers and spade-shaped, olive-green leaves. It grows in a cold climates.

Oregano is native to the hills of the Mediterranean countries and western Asia and has naturalized in parts of Mexico and the United States.

Uses of Oregano

For cooking

Oregano is often used dried rather than fresh in strongly flavoured dishes in which ingredients such as chilli, garlic, tomatoes, onions, olives and wine predominate in Italian, Greek and Mexican cooking.

As alternative medicine

Oregano essential oil were first recognized in ancient Greece where it was often used for treating bacterial infections on the skin or wounds because of its disinfectant and antibacterial properties.

Oregano is used in natural medicine for many different ailments, from colds and coughs, to digestive issues, to aches and pains.
