This topic brings about a lot of memories and ruminating on it now, makes me realize that a lot of what I thought was my fear then was just a product of my own imagination, causing me to fear things that do not at the present or may never exist, just as a saying goes “fear doesn’t exist anywhere except in our mind”
Fear from the natural point of view is “a strong unpleasant negative emotion induced by the actual or perceived danger or threat”. While From the scientific point of view “fear is a natural, powerful and primitive unpleasant human emotion involving both a universal biochemical as well as a high individual emotional response”.
While in my own view I will say “Fear is a thing of heart, an illusion, a mirage in our subconscious mind that create a sensation or perception that tell us that something is threatening”. It is something will encounter each and every day of our lives until we develop different strategies of dealing with it.
Fear can be anything except a pleasant emotion, it is not comforting, and of in fact it is distressing and uncomfortable. It has the ability to play with our emotion and challenge our perception and this is where its inherent danger lies (ability to play and toy with our mind). Fear debilitate one, it immobilize one. We freeze, tense up, go rigid, our heart begin to pound in our chest, our throat close up, a chill runs down our spine with an inner voice ringing out danger in the face of fear!
I could vividly remember the first time I watched an horror movie (The Nun) in my life, it was just only me in the room that day and I could remember the fear that griped my heart that very moment, I could hardly close me eyes for a seconds without seeing the scary image appearing in my subconscious mind with the intention to get hold of me. It wasn’t a pleasant experience that very day but little did I know that it was just an illusion, just as the saying goes that “it is a False Identity Appearing Real”
SO WHAT DO PEOPLE REALLY FEAR?
This is more or less like a personify question, ask me why? Because our fears differ from one another, what I fear may not seem to be a fear to someone else. This brought me to say everyone has their own definition of fear. Many people live their life under the holds of many fears such as:
FEAR OF FAILURE, which has kept a lot of people from trying out new things, new ideas, new places, new positions, new opportunity thereby has limited them from maximizing their full potential. FEAR OF WHAT WILL PEOPLE SAY if I fail or didn’t do it right, fear of what will my friend and family will think of me if things didn’t go as plan, forgetting that there is only one thing that can makes a dream impossible to achieve and that’s the fear of failure. This has demoralizes the mental prowess of many, it makes one not to imagine greatness but settles for much less. Other people own may be FEAR OF SUCCESS, This is a sense of insecurity in terms of the inability to hand new levels of achievement.
It could be FEAR OF FUTURE, some people so much so fear what tomorrow holds for them or what future may bring that they are so extremely careful of not making a mistake that they end up making a huge mistake even before that tomorrow comes into reality, this was the valley I dwell so much in some years back, when the only source of hope or ticket I thought I have to achieving my goals and making my dream comes into reality was gone and this left a large vacuum of fear in me, the thought of how am I going to survive, the thought of what will become of me, how can I achieve this without the help of this fellow, how can I journey this on my own, this are many fear that linger in my mind for so long, until I came across a verse in the bible that say “ cast all your cares, anxiety, fears on him because he cares for us” (1 peter 5:7) and ever since then there is this peace that resides in me knowing he cares for me. So I will say it is normal to have fear but do not allow it to overwhelm you but rather face your fear.
Others may be FEAR OF UNKNOWN, this has kept a lot of people in a web of lies that they found it difficult to come out of it (for instants many so much so fear losing their love, respect or image that they go to the extreme ends to prevent that, which may be sometime be disastrous at the end). Some are FEAR OF THEIR PAST, THEIR BACKGROUND OR PAST MISTAKE.
Some could be PHOBIA, FEAR OF HEIGHT, FEAR OF CROWD, FEAR OF WATER, FEAR OF UNCONTROLLED SOCIAL CONDITIONS, FEAR OF ANIMALS, FEAR OF EVIL OR DEATH AND LOT MORE.
But above, be mindful of what you fear, be careful not to call fought what you fear into reality. Just as apostle Paul says “that what I fear most is what befalls me”. However just as Steve job said and I quote that “remembering that I’ll be dead soon is the most important tool I’ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything (all external expectations, all pride, all fear of failure or embarrassment) these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important”
WHY DO PEOPLE FEAR?
Many people exercise far in one way or the other because it’s in our human nature to fear, it is an inherent characteristics that we all share from our forefathers Adams, “after they eat the fruits and fall, then God came in the cool of the day and call out Adam and he went to hid because fear griped him and he was so afraid”
Also we exercise fear when we lack control of a situation or when we are face with situation that is above our control. Fear set in when we feel we have no power over the situation at hand and its just feels so overwhelming, so big than what will can handle or control.
THEN HOW CAN WE OVERCOME THIS FEAR?
I will say STAY PRESENT, stop living in the past, confront your fear with present moment awareness. *SYSTEMATIC DESENSITIZATION *(be conscious of it), fear can immobilize us but also can instigate a lot of nervous energy, the better prepared you are, the more confident you’ll feel. SHARE YOUR FEARS, this will help you alleviate the burden of anxiety when you voice your fear out, it give you power over that fear. Then CAREFULLY CONFRONT YOUR FEAR(face it until it fade out) *AND OVERCOMING IT WITH MINDFULNESS.
