Off to the Ranch #17: Repurposing car tires & fertilizing the trees

in ecoTrain3 years ago

Heeeyho Readers! More updates from our little ranch!

"Here, some photos to add to the blog," says Dad over the chat app.

With his clear order, I guess this post is more of my dad's post then mine. At least the photos are his, and the idea, and the initiative. Note: I've tried to encourage my dad to start a Hive blog but he doesn't speak English nor is very enthusiastic about writing in Portuguese. I'll keep on trying though. Anyways.

It's been a while that we are planning to fertilize our fruit trees with compost, but, since I was busy having my eyes checked, Dad embarked on this mission solo. It's an important step in cultivating fruit trees for two reasons: I.) provides the trees with nutrients and II.) gives us a chance to repurpose rubber tires.

According to Google, it takes approximately 50-80 years (or longer) for a tire to decompose in a landfill.

Dad collected various used tires at a local shop for this project. Shops are more than glad to give them away for free, as used tires take a lot of space and have no other destination than recycling initiatives. Check what he's done.

Final result

Before we start I have to mention: We could've added the compost without the tires, but 100% of certainty the chickens would scatter it in seconds — that's why we added the tires as a contention barrier.

First and most tedious step is to cut all the tires in half. Dad used our table saw for this step.

All cut in half

He then cleaned around the fruit trees where the tires will lay. I'm thinking that once the trees grow there's no way to take the tires out unless cutting. I guess it's not a problem. And its better to have the tires rot away serving a purpose then buried into the ground. The half tired goes as follow.

Soil preparation

You cannot see, but the soil in our ranch is kinda rocky, in the sense that it has tiny rocks mixed in. For that reason it's crucial to provide the trees with the compost we make separately. You can see our compost here.

Once the soil is prepared we can add the tires over the tree and around the base, in order to create a nice, localized, juicy, super sexy compost directly near the roots.

Tadaaaaam

IMG-20220222-WA0011.jpg

This has an explanation

As you can see, the compound is very contained where it should be and won't be scattered by demoniac chickens nor the rain.

Speaking of chicken...

Of course the Chickenian army attacked the compost with full raging eyes and tiny little claws, so Dad was forced to place old tiles on top. Not the most beautiful solution. And it doesn't work either {laughs}. The little feathered Satan discovered they can step onto the tip and flip the tiles. Dad is about to make chicken soup if they don't behave well.

I don't have a conclusion picture since I spoiled the result right in the beginning of this post {sorry}. But I do have some other projects using tires that I plan to bring on future posts.

If you've read this far please comment with Mr. Sexy Dad rocks to make the old fart happy. Until next time.

Peace.

@tipu curate

Hah! I'll show him this. Thanks for really reading! Sometimes it feels my blog is dying.

I only follow 50 people and I always try to read everything that shows up in my feed ;) Yours is one of the most enjoyable contents I follow so it´s a pleasure and fun to check it out. No worries, your blog isn´t dying ;)

Holy shit. I've just now noticed you follow only 50 people. I should clean up my following as a lot of accounts are not posting anymore. Btw, I also have a routine of checking the same accounts everyday, you's is one.

Yeah, I think it´s impossible to follow hundreds of users on daily basis and read all those posts every day. That´s why I keep my followings at just 50 :) Thanks buddy, I know my blog is not as cool as for example yours because of all the weekly series that I run but they got quite popular over the time so I´m keeping them :)

The problem with your contests is that I'm never prepared to participate \o\o\ especially the nature contest.

By the way, what happened to Czech Global Hosts?

He left Hive soon after the fork but we had a little convo a couple of weeks ago and he said he was doing fine. Still in crypto he said, very interested in the Metaverse. Oh and he moved to Portugal :)

Hi my friend. Just curious why you decided to unfollow me? 🙂

Comet Ranker

Yoooooo you still alive! I'm going through the following list and thought you weren't active anymore. What have you been doing?

Check my comments! 😉

I’m ultra busy just with curation and with a special focus for comments. I’m doing this through the @Comet.Ranker account and have actually been giving thousands of Hive away… also… go check @Actifit. You will notice that I’m busy doing a collaboration with Appics and I’m still very much one of @Actifit’s personal trainers. I have sidelined @AdventureReady and @BeachReady (my two fitness companies) on the Hive Blockchain due to a lot of negative social forces at play on the blockchain over the last 6 months (approx.).

How about you?

How’s everything and what have you beenUP to? 🙂

Awesome. I haven't checked activity, that's fair (only the last post date). I'm glad you notified me though because I didn't know about the Comet Ranker nor was active on Actfit (since 2018). How does it work?

One of the reasons why I'm re-arranging my follower's list is so I have focus to engage more (one of my weaknesses). Sometimes I feel like on-chain activity is so automated, and I don't want to be part of it.

I'm doing fine over here. Still cycling, just not posting as much about it. Broke my leg last year and been having some occasional weird body pain ever since; I guess it's anxiety.

Yeah man. I actually remember that you had broken your leg last year. I thought it had healed properly... I'm sorry that your still dealing with the after effects of your injury. I know this all to well and have had my own struggles with recovery. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help/support you alright?! I'm a certified personal trainer (you knew this right?) now since 2008 and actually injury recovery is one of my specializations.

About @Comet.Ranker! That's a whole MASIVE Project that I have been working on for a little longer than 6 months now but it's been idea I have been thinking about now for about 5 years or so... It actually all began when I found Steem (back in the old days) and decided to kick my FB to the curb. ☄️

Also! Check out the most recent engagement event that was hosted by @CometRanker called Operation #Ping! It sounds like (based on your decision to focus in on your following list) your already thinking and doing a lot of the things we did and are doing! 💪 + 👟

It's a combination project bringing the @Actifit & @Appics communities together around healthy positive lifestyles and common ground (rather than the usual dull throb of conflict that can be found around here. 😉) Myself and 2 other reputable trainers are on the ground floor with exercises' and inspiration to move and get going to!

Arthur... I hope this comment reaches you well and that you are in good spirits! 🙌

Please consider following me again would you? 😉

Chow for now!

Wow! I appreciate you taking the time to write such a detailed comment and for carrying about my well-being. I didn't know we were so connected on Hive.

I thought it had healed properly... I'm sorry that your still dealing with the after effects of your injury.

The leg itself healed fantastically well. I guess what is bugging me now is anxiety (occasional stiff neck, headaches, indigestion). I don't know why, since I've always been a chill guy. (guess I need to hit the road again). Exercising used to make me fell awesome, but now it just drains my energies.

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help/support you alright?! I'm a certified personal trainer (you knew this right?) now since 2008 and actually injury recovery is one of my specializations.

Much much much appreciated. Just knowing there's someone out there offering help makes me glad.

Operation Ping? Hah! I was reading the post you messaged me. Looks fun. And quite a challenge to ping 900+ followers. Makes me wonder how many of them are simply dormant. When's the next operation? I'm following @comet.ranker.

I guess I have to crank up my Actfit app again!

Please consider following me again would you?

Sure ^~
My unfollow wasn't anything personal, don't take it that way.

hahaha, chicken army, here it goes!
I must say I did not know about the lifetime of a tyre, that's interesting.

Me neither! I thought it lasted much much more, like 200 years or more.

probs valid!

Another favorite chicken story, haha! I had warned you :)

Mr. Sexy Dad

Really? What about those who skip the text and go directly to the messages (if this type even exists)? Haha!
Your dad has a lot of patience and it is much needed :)

He's about to throw 2 of our chickens into a pan though

Even patience has its limits and maybe some things are inevitable :)

Haha cool that your dad supports your blog, its nice if friends and family are excited if it goes about your blog! very clever of the chickens, I would not have thought that they can even knock down tiles!

These little chickens are smart as hell and I'm sure they are ready to take over the world!
