Family as primarily defines is a group of folks related by blood, marriage or reason of bond by companionship.
Some may say Family is one who sticks out his neck for you, care for you, love you, knows you, does all for your wellness and wishes you the best. This is very correct even as they are traits of family.

The ones who show you love are regarded as family because there is definitely a strong bond that is connected especially from your first love which is your main family but like you said as well family doesn't also mean those related to by blood but those who care about you and appreciate you anyday, anytime.
