Fall garden update: Cherry trees

With this first year of these trees in the ground coming to a close, most of them have put on a good amount of growth. Three of the four probably gained about a foot in height. And I see many new nodes forming that should grow next year. Just a few weeks before making this video I was getting quite worried about these trees. The leaves started yellowing and not looking very happy. Since this was the first year I have grown them I was not sure what to expect and it made me worry when I saw such a drastic change.

Though after speaking with some other owners of Cherry trees in the area, I realized it was just the time of year where these trees slow down and start to drop their leaves.

That made me feel alot better as I thought the trees were being attacked by some fungus or something. I even thought maybe my wood chips caused it. But in the end I am glad I spoke with someone else that had Cherry trees for many years now.

Maybe next year these trees will flower, and hoping my Mason bees will make good use of the nectar and pollen. Maybe we will get even so lucky to get some fruit forming. Though you never know, these trees are quite young and it may be a few years before they form fruit. Though as soon as I planted the Lapins they flowered and then dropped their flowers shortly after. So I am hopeful next year they will do it again but this time the bees will make use of them.

Soon enough all the leaves will have dropped and these trees will just be bare, waiting for the warm weather to return.

Between the Lapins, Black Tartarian and Minnie Royal I should have a nice collection of cherry trees.

I also discuss "chill hours" and how they affect different kinds of fruit trees. Apple trees, Cherry trees, Blueberry bushes and some other plants needs at least a certain amount of hours below 45F outside. Where I live I get more than enough for these kinds of trees, but it is very important to buy the right trees and bushes for your region.
