Last year's drought claimed a couple of the decorative trees from the garden at the end of summer. We were away for Christmas holidays and the water restrictions meant we couldn't use the timer on the sprinklers.
We decided that grow bags would be a good option. There isn't much depth in the garden as it's built on top of a garage. Plus we'll want to move house so digging them out wasn't attractive. Plus the winter sun and the summer sun positions are quite different as we are surrounded by tall buildings so being able to move them around will be really useful.
I ordered 50cm grow bags and they first received the cat of approval, yep I think they are big enough!
Then onto choosing a varietal of tree! We picked a Meyer Lemon for size (up to about 2m) and it's ability to crop continuously and it's also good in cold conditions (which is where we think our future lies).
In the garden the first job was to remove the old dead trees and chop up the branches to make fire wood (well mostly kindling).
Then onto 'potting it up' into the grow bag. We used citrus and fruit soil with a bit of chicken manure and compost mixed it so it's nicely fed while it settles in. There's certainly plenty of space to grow. I think we'll pop some shorter season things around the perimeter of the bag but that's a job for another day.
It already has buds which is pretty satisfying! Can't wait for our first lemon but I think I'm jumping the gun.
Brilliant. Lemon trees are an absolute necessity!!! And I'm sure the cat thinks so too!!!
Now we want ALL the trees!
