3D Printed Dinner Plate

in 3D Printing3 years ago

Hello Everyone,

The past few days I've been working on a few different prints, two of which are still a work in progress and one of them is 50% complete.

It's exciting because I have some cool upcoming content to share with the community. The only thing that is tough sometimes is the fact that certain prints take a very long time to print, and certain errors occur that can slow things down.

Out of the two other projects I'm working on, one issue I'm having is something called slicing tolerance. It's a print in place moving parts design, and these are very tricky to print sometimes and require fine adjustments in the slicing software.

Anyway, let's check out this cool dinner plate I found on Thingiverse.

Everything went smooth with the make. As it was building, I could see a few areas that could be improved on my slicer with the top and bottom layers, but opted to let it finish anyway because as long as the top layer comes out nice, all of this is hidden.

The top layer came out nice indeed.

I love the "stitching" around the plate lip!

I feel like this would be a nice plate to put some dinner rolls on when I have some company over. Surely this plate would invoke some conversation!

Despite this print being super cool, it's not all sunshine and rainbows in some areas. I don't like how much support material was needed. What you see above is all waste material, and it is quite a bit. Enough to make quite a few small prints.

I will not be making more of these because of this, even though I would like some more of these plates.

I will probably try to find some different versions eventually, or create my own.

The bottom is pretty ugly to keep it real... I'm almost embarrassed to show this but... I believe in being transparent about all of the aspects here, the good with the bad...

I won't be quick to flip it over and show a guest, but it's not like it's a big deal really, and I still feel like it's a great conversation piece with a practical use!

I would not want to use this for any "wet foods".. Bread and other dry things will be its only use, because I don't want food gunk in the crevices and issues with cleaning and longevity of the plate.

What do you all think of this? Would you eat off of my 3D printed dinner plate? I would love to read your thoughts below in the comment section.

That will do it for today.

Your time is a valuable commodity, and I always keep this in mind and do my best to respond to everyone!

Thank you kindly for all of the amazing support and engagement!

Have a great day! ~~@print3dpro

Thanks for the doggy treats yo.......I'd eat them off that funky lookin' plate of yours any day 😂🤗

Haha, no doubt you would my friend @flamistan! Thanks for wagging on over to take a look at this funky lookin' Hyumi creation! ;)

Ya know ma kewl Hyumi-homi, ever since you coined the term 'flamazing', Barge and I have been bouncing ideas back and forth. Here's one of 'em :D

A simple but complicated project! Wonderous!

I have always wanted edible plates and cutlery! Is there such a thing as a 3D printer for food?

And of course they do! WOW!

Hospital uses one!

And they have monetized them pretty quick!

TL;DR: I WANT EDIBLE PLATES!

This is quite mind blowing actually.. I have to admit that I would utilize this process to seduce, and I bet it would be rather effective :P

It would be super cool for custom birthday cakes and holiday projects too, people could even make a business out of it, no doubt.

Thanks for sharing these awesome videos my friend!

Let's just all agree that 3D printing is just plain cool.

I think in the not-so-distant future it'll be more common to print food like @evileddy mentioned. Just like what we see on Star Trek shows where Jean-Luc Picard orders his Earl Grey Tea, "Hot!"

Although, I did like how Leeloo from Fifth Element was able to get a huge chicken dinner in a few seconds by pushing a couple of buttons. That type of tech seems far in the future. Yet, still seems somewhat plausible.

Bring on the food replicators and instant roast chickens!!!

Omg that character role was so funny 😅 The actor really nailed it.

You and @evileddy have me laughing over here with these nostalgic movie gifs 😅The Fifth Element, wow it's been so long since I've watched this movie!

I don't think I would be opposed to such technology where I could push a button and have a delicious meal, sometimes cooking is a real drag for me lol.

Yep 3D printing is pretty cool :)

Here's a sneak peak of an upcoming project post, you're lucky because I won't just do this for anyone :D

But I suppose everyone can see now hahaha, say... What would you guess this is? It will be impressive if you can guess, because it is only 68% percent done, as an 18 hour print at this point while typing :)

I am curious about something. I understand support material is necessary because of the overhanging edge of the plate. It looked to me that the support material was printed as a separate piece. The question that occurred to me was whether when the print was finished the plate could be removed and the support material left in place, and another plate printed using the original support material.

Unless removing the plate could not be prevented from disturbing the bed level and home position, it seems to me, in my absolute ignorance of 3D printing realities and operating on theories I've only read about, that this should be possible.

I'd appreciate any comment regarding this you are able to offer.

Thanks!

The brilliance of your out of the box thinking has me in awe, truly. I have never even considered this.

In theory I believe this could be possible but only with some custom macros and a high level of expertise in the field.

In current practice/configuration wise, it's not very possible, and I will explain why.

The primary aspect is removal of the support material. It requires some force that would be rather difficult to achieve with keeping the supports attached to the bed plate, but it's possible to reduce the support adhesion to the part through the slicer rendering software. I'm not well adept at this currently.

The other considerable aspect is travel moves. Although generating this model with no supports will remove the travel moves for the printed support areas (which would be a must to make this possible) it would require some kind of custom macro to raise the print head higher than the supports during the initial "primer" move, (from home position) which starts at the edge of the bed plate. This can also be modified and it's possible to even remove the primer travel altogether, but I am not sure how, and think it might require custom macros.

A pause macro could be utilized to place the support back on the plate after the initial travel move as well, but this would require some kind marking on the bed plate, and precision with re-placement would be a must. I am not sure how to attach an already printed support piece. Glue of some kind would be necessary, and I am skeptical of how effective it would be.

Thank you for this amazing thought process you've shared. I hope my answer clears up how difficult this would be to achieve, but indeed I do think it's possible.

Have a great day my friend.
