Yesterday, my mother visited me in Münster, and we started our day by heading to the Schloss in Münster, which is also part of the university. Last time she visited, we didn’t have time to explore the Schloss as we were mostly in the city center. Of course, we took the obligatory photo in front of the Schloss that everyone seems to take with their moms or visitors. My friends (who are doing their Bachelor’s as well as their Master’s in Münster) also have pictures in front of the Schloss with their Bachelor’s thesis—apparently, it's a Münster tradition.
Behind the Schloss is the Schlossgarten, which is absolutely stunning. We strolled through the various greenhouses and admired the small lake. Unfortunately, due to the frost and cold weather, there weren’t as many plants to see as there would be in summer. My mom is determined to visit again in summer to experience the garden in full bloom. The botanical garden also offers free guided tours on topics like wild herbs, plants and climate change, and more.
At some point, a kind woman approached us and explained that the small figurine you can see here (the one in different costumes) is scattered all around the city and is a kind of Münster landmark. The artist, a former alcoholic, is now trying to rebuild his life through art, which I found incredibly touching and inspiring. The woman was so sweet to take the time to tell us about it, especially since she noticed we weren’t originally from Münster.
Since parts of the Schloss house facilities for biology students, I imagine many of them help care for the plants or breed new ones to eventually plant in the botanical garden.
Right across from the Schloss is a restaurant called "Le Feu," which serves Flammkuchen. They even offer an all-you-can-eat Flammkuchen event for groups at €25, where you can order and try as many variations as you like. I chose a Flammkuchen with feta cheese and spinach, while my mom had an Alsace-style Flammkuchen.
Afterward, we headed to my apartment to store some of my stuff and then decided to grab a coffee before I brought my mom back to the train station. We ended up going to a patisserie where we had the most delicious cakes. I had a cheesecake mousse tart, and my mom had a Black Forest cake. The hot chocolate there was unbelievably tasty and only cost €2.90, so I’ll definitely be going back there!
When we got to the train station, we had a rather bizarre encounter with a man somewhere in his mid-20s to late-30s. He offered to rap for us in Chinese, English, or German for €0.50. We politely declined, but he rapped for us anyway! My mom didn’t really know how to react, but I couldn’t stop laughing. Later, he came back and said that if he could make me laugh that hard, I should pay him. You have to admit, the guy knows how to hustle! :D

🇩🇪 DEUTSCHE VERSION
Gestern hat mich meine Mutter in Münster besucht, und wir sind direkt am Anfang zum Schloss gefahren, das auch ein Teil der Universität ist. Beim letzten Mal hatten wir keine Zeit, uns das Schloss anzuschauen, da wir eher in der Innenstadt unterwegs waren. Natürlich haben wir vor dem Schloss das obligatorische Foto gemacht, das jeder mit seiner Mutter oder den Leuten, die einen besuchen, schießt. Meine Freunde (die hier in Münster sowohl ihren Bachelor als auch ihren Master machen) haben ebenfalls, wie alle Münsteraner, ein Foto mit ihrer Bachelorarbeit vor dem Schloss gemacht – das gehört hier irgendwie dazu.
Hinter dem Schloss befindet sich der Schlossgarten, der wirklich wunderschön ist. Wir sind durch die verschiedenen Gewächshäuser gelaufen und haben den kleinen See beobachtet. Leider konnten wir aufgrund des Frosts und der Kälte nicht so viele Pflanzen sehen wie im Sommer. Meine Mutter möchte deshalb auf jeden Fall im Sommer wiederkommen, um den Garten in voller Pracht zu erleben. Im botanischen Garten werden auch kostenlose Führungen zu Themen wie Wildkräutern, Pflanzen im Klimawandel und vieles mehr angeboten.
Irgendwann sprach uns eine nette Dame an und erklärte uns, dass das kleine Männchen, das ihr hier sehen könnt (in verschiedenen Kostümchen), überall in der Stadt verteilt ist und eine Art Wahrzeichen von Münster darstellt. Der Künstler, ein ehemaliger Alkoholiker, versucht nun, sich ein neues Leben aufzubauen. Das fand ich sehr berührend und inspirierend. Die Frau war so lieb, uns das zu erklären, weil sie gemerkt hat, dass wir nicht aus Münster stammen.
Da sich in dem Schloss auch Räumlichkeiten der Biologie befinden, nehme ich an, dass viele Biologie-Studierende mit daran arbeiten, die Pflanzen zu pflegen oder neue Arten zu züchten, die dann später im Botanischen Garten eingepflanzt werden.
Direkt gegenüber vom Schloss befindet sich ein Restaurant namens „Le Feu“, in dem man Flammkuchen essen kann. Tatsächlich kann man dort in Gruppen für 25 € ein „All-you-can-eat-Flammkuchen-Happening“ erleben, bei dem man so viele verschiedene Flammkuchen bestellen und probieren kann, wie man möchte. Ich habe mir einen Flammkuchen mit Schafskäse und Spinat ausgesucht, während meine Mutter einen Flammkuchen Elsässer Art hatte.
Danach sind wir zu meiner Wohnung gefahren, haben dort ein paar meiner Sachen verstaut und wollten anschließend noch einen Kaffee trinken gehen, bevor ich meine Mutter wieder zum Bahnhof bringe. Wir sind in eine Konditorei gegangen und haben dort unglaublich leckeren Kuchen gegessen. Ich hatte eine Käsesahnetorte, und meine Mutter hatte eine Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte. Der Kakao war so lecker und hat nur 2,90 € gekostet – dort werde ich auf jeden Fall öfter hingehen.
Am Bahnhof hatten wir dann noch eine sehr skurrile Begegnung mit einem Mann, der zwischen Mitte 20 und Ende 30 war. Er bot uns an, für 0,50 € auf Chinesisch, Englisch oder Deutsch zu rappen. Wir haben dankend abgelehnt, aber er hat trotzdem für uns gerappt! Meine Mutter wusste nicht so recht, wie sie reagieren sollte, und ich konnte einfach nicht aufhören zu lachen. Später kam er zurück und meinte, wenn er mich so zum Lachen bringen kann, sollte ich ihm Geld zahlen. Geschäftssinn hat der Mann auf jeden Fall! :D
