Few people know that in Italy there is a collection of rare tulips, which is among the most important in Europe from a scientific point of view.
We are not at the level of Holland, where tulips are part of the local culture and for a long time have been a valuable commodity, but even in Italy we defend ourselves.
In this season tulips are at their full splendor, because they bloom between March and April. I would like to visit the famous tulip fields in Holland one day, have you ever been there?

Poche persone sanno che in Italia esiste una collezione di tulipani rari, che è tra le più importanti d’Europa dal punto di vista scientifico.
Non siamo ai livelli dell’Olanda, dove i tulipani fanno parte della cultura locale e per lungo tempo sono stati merce di scambio di valore, ma anche in Italia ci difendiamo.
In questa stagione i tulipani sono nel pieno del loro splendore, perché fioriscono tra marzo e aprile. Mi piacerebbe un giorno visitare i famosi campi di tulipani in Olanda, voi ci siete mai stati?
I’m a curious person, so I went to read the history of these beautiful plants. Originally from the mountainous regions of Central Asia, in particular between Iran and Afghanistan, they were imported into Europe in the 16th century.
In particular, the country where they were most appreciated was Holland, where they became very popular and were also the subject of the first speculative bubble in European economic history. In fact, the bulbs reached incredible and exorbitant prices, bringing the entire sector to the brink of the precipice!
Sono una persona curiosa, quindi sono andata a leggere la storia di queste bellissime piante. Originari delle regioni montuose dell’Asia centrale, in particolare tra Iran e Afghanistan, furono importati in Europa nel XVI secolo.
In particolare, il Paese dove vennero apprezzati di più fu l’Olanda, dove divennero molto popolari e furono anche oggetto della prima bolla speculativa della storia economica europea. Infatti, i bulbi raggiunsero prezzi incredibili ed esorbitanti, portando l’intero settore sull’orlo del precipizio!
Tulips adapt well to the Italian climate and are relatively easy to grow: the bulbs are planted in autumn, at a depth of 10-15 cm, and in spring they awaken in all their splendor. After flowering, the leaves are usually left to dry and the bulbs are collected to be planted the following season.
The species that we can find in the collection are for example:
- “Parrot” with ruffled and colored petals, reminiscent of a parrot's feathers;
- “Lily-flowered” with a shape similar to a lily and bright colors;
- “Darwin hybrid” that can reach 60 cm in height and have large flowers;
- And many others.
I tulipani si adattano bene al clima italiano e solo relativamente facili da coltivare: i bulbi si piantano in autunno, a una profondità di 10-15 cm, e in primavera si risvegliano in tutto il loro splendore. Dopo la fioritura, solitamente si lasciano seccare le foglie e si raccolgono i bulbi da piantare nella stagione successiva.
Le specie che possiamo trovare nella collezione sono per esempio:
- “Parrot” con petali increspati e colorati, che ricordano le piume di un pappagallo;
- “Lily-flowered” dalla forma simile a un giglio e colori vivaci;
- “Darwin hybrid” che possono raggiungere i 60 cm di altezza e presentano fiori sono di grandi dimensioni;
- E molti altri.

I have only seen tulips in pictures. Never saw them in person. They are in deed beautiful. I wonder how they smell?
They aren't famous for their smell, they smell like general flowers. Which kind of flowers do you have in your country? 😊
Jasmine and rose are the most commom ones. There are certain others but not that common

Tulips, especially in vast quantities, are quite lovely! A definitive sign of spring all over the world for sure! Your photos of them are lovely.
here is a link to a tulip festival about 40 miles from where I live. It's unfortunate, but I've never been in the 25 years we've lived in the state. Perhaps some spring soon, I will get the opportunity.
