These days here in Italy we are having wonderful sunny days, but unfortunately they will be the last because winter is approaching. I take advantage of this, therefore, to go to green places such as woods and parks as much as I can to observe the plants and continue my studies on the vegetation of the Mediterranean.
The aspects that fascinate me the most are two: first of all, the beauty of being able to recognize the different plant species at a glance. This ability is not immediate but is acquired only with the experience that I’m gaining over the months and the progress is numerous. The second fascinating aspect is to think about the incredible history of centuries and centuries that lies behind the plant species that pass before our eyes every day.

In questi giorni qui in Italia stiamo avendo delle meravigliose giornate di sole, ma purtroppo saranno le ultime perché si sta avvicinando l’inverno. Ne approfitto, quindi, per recarmi finché posso in luoghi verdi come boschi e parchi per osservare le piante e continuare i miei studi sulla vegetazione del Mediterraneo.
Gli aspetti che mi affascinano di più sono due: innanzitutto, la bellezza di saper riconoscere le diverse specie vegetali a vista d’occhio. Questa capacità non è immediata ma si acquisisce solo con l’esperienza che sto maturando nel corso dei mesi e i progressi sono numerosi. Il secondo aspetto affascinante è pensare all’incredibile storia di secoli e secoli che risiede dietro alle specie vegetali che passano tutti i giorni sotto ai nostri occhi.
We have already spoken at length about the concrete uses of plant species that have improved the life of the populations of the Mediterranean.
However, over the centuries a rich series of folkloristic traditions, legends, ritual and magical uses and symbolic meanings have also developed. As an example, we can mention:
- Myrtle was a plant sacred to Aphrodite, the goddess of beauty; it was also closely linked to femininity in ancient times and symbolized fertility; the link with Aphrodite meant that this plant was considered a good omen and for this reason the heads of high administrative and military officials were adorned with it;
Abbiamo già parlato lungamente degli utilizzi concreti delle specie vegetali che hanno migliorato la vita delle popolazioni del Mediterraneo.
Tuttavia, nel corso dei secoli si è sviluppata anche una ricca serie di tradizioni folkloristiche, di leggende, di impieghi rituali e magici e di significati simbolici. A titolo di esempio possiamo citare:
- Il mirto era una pianta sacra ad Afrodite, dea della bellezza; era inoltre strettamente legato nell’antichità alla femminilità e simboleggiava la fecondità; il legame con Afrodite ha fatto sì che questa pianta fosse considerata di buon augurio e per questo motivo se ne ornavano il capo le alte cariche amministrative e militari;
- Laurel was offered to the winners of the competitions in the Pythian games of ancient Greece; evoking the symbol of victory, in Rome it crowned the foreheads of victorious generals and was later reserved for the Emperor; its use was later passed on to the Christians to symbolize victory over death;
- Rosemary was a symbol of immortality for the Egyptians; the funerary use of this plant spread throughout much of the Mediterranean and also in Northern Europe: evidence of this can be found, for example, in the custom that existed of including rosemary among the plants used for funeral wreaths. In ancient Greece, young twigs were burned during religious ceremonies.
Even from a linguistic point of view, there are numerous examples of commonly used words derived from the name of plants or from uses to which they were associated.
- L'alloro era offerto ai vincitori delle gare nei giochi Pitici dell'antica Grecia; evocando il simbolo della vittoria, a Roma incoronava la fronte dei generali vittoriosi e successivamente fu riservato all'Imperatore; l'uso passò successivamente ai Cristiani per simboleggiare la vittoria sulla morte;
- Il rosmarino per gli Egizi era simbolo di immortalità; l’uso funerario di questa pianta si è diffuso in gran parte del Mediterraneo ed anche nel Nord Europa: testimonianza se ne trova, ad esempio, nella consuetudine che esisteva di includere il rosmarino tra le piante impiegate per le corone funebri. Nella Grecia antica, se ne bruciavano i ramoscelli giovani durante le cerimonie religiose.
Anche dal punto di vista linguistico esistono numerosi esempi di vocaboli di uso comune derivati da nome di piante o da usi cui erano esse associate.
