Lego Harry Potter Advent Calendar Review ~Episode Two~

in Ladies of Hive2 years ago (edited)

Welcome Back!

Unless you're new here, in which case, welcome to the series! This is a weekly review of the Lego Harry Potter Advent Calendar. Rules are as follows:

  • My opinions are arbitrary, however I will do my best to be constructive in my critiques.
  • My husband is partnering with me on this series as an outside opinion. My man knows next to nothing about Harry Potter. This is both hilarious, and mildly triggering.
  • I would love to hear opinions about this series. If you felt partial to any particular build, please leave a comment. At the end of the series (Christmas Eve) I will rank the builds by popularity.
  • As stated previously, this is a series. If you like what you see here, please feel welcome to check out Episode One for days 1-4, however it is not necessary to enjoy this one on it's own!
  • New episodes will come out every Sunday. I realized my schedule will simply not allow for Saturdays, unfortunately. The only exception for this will likely be the 24th of December, as I will actually have the time.

Now, without Further ado!

005.jpgPeakaboo! I ssssssee you! 9/10 I adore this take on the Chamber of Secrets. With it popping out of the hole it provides so much depth to an otherwise simplistic design. Lego has truly outdone themselves with how creative these little sets are. I can not stress enough how well made this whole calendar is.
00E.jpgA strong start with an elaborate build! Maybe, too elaborate though? 7/10 My only critique for this particular build lies within some of it's limitations of being so small and made of Legos. While I can see an attempt to recreate the face of Salazar Slytherin, it's a bit too gaudy and mildly creepy in an uncanny way for my taste. In the Lego games, they did not even attempt to make his face from Legos. I think it would have come across better if they had followed that idea here. Aside from that it's extremely well made with only 15 pieces, almost all reusable! I adore the little wiggling doors to the left and right of the snake. It absolutely gives the feeling of popping right out of a wall.

@BananoFarmer: I think it's a pretty decent build, but I was surprised to find out this lived in a bathroom or something like that.

006.jpgI have very few words! 10/10
00F.jpgFew characters end up as Iconic as Moaning Myrtle. This Lego figure is completely faultless. With the soft plastic hair that perfectly recaptures her pigtails, to the the near completely accurate artistic details of her tattered school uniform. I especially admire tiny little silver tear on her cheek.

@BananoFarmer:Seems pretty good, it can be hard to find unique or interesting hair pieces for the minifigure. Since I don't know this character though, I give it a 6/10.

007.jpgTake it away, Ern! It's gonna be a bumpy ride! 10/10 This precious little set makes me feel so nostalgic as Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban was the first in the series that I was old enough to remember the film release date. Unfortunately at the time taking me would have meant also taking my younger sister who was not old enough to behave in the theater, so Mom took only my older brother. I was already devastated, but when he came back with a FREE Lego night bus set that they gave out at the premier... I was livid. Absolutely fuming. Mom ended up feeling so bad, and then after I never missed another showing. I also totally stole my brothers set like the little monster I am! Ha! (So sorry Bro, omg!!!)
00G.jpgWith a total of 21 pieces, this is a master craft 10/10 Not only does it perfectly represent the night bus in all it's three tiered, purple glory, but it does so by putting it in the scene (one so perfect, I'm even willing to forgive the pain in my ass stacked flat 1x2's)! A darkened street contrasted with a well lit side walk. The street lamp perfectly compliments the bus in color scheme, and also height. I can't even begin to describe the satisfaction I felt when it was all put together. This is by far my favorite build of the whole calendar so far.

@BananoFarmer: I don't even know what the night bus does, but I like this one a lot. They did a nice job making these small pieces look like a vehicle on the side of the road. 9/10

008.jpgMy heart exploded. Look. At. The. Dementors...10/10!!!! This weeks sets are turning out to be utterly fantastic. The scene this is displaying has been so well preserved in the miniature process. I almost wish for a teeny tiny Harry and Sirius, or a little White Stag. But the Dementors alone... Absolutely perfect! Though I will admit some bias. I've always loved Dementors in lego sets. Previously they achieved the looks by making the into skeletons with a tattered felt cloth, a creepy grey head with a butthole looking mouth, and a plastic hood to hold the pieces together. So much creativity . I just love it all so much!
00H.jpgExpecto-patronuuuuum!!!!7/10 So I do have some gripes with the actual set itself in terms of lego builds. While it does an incredible job of being a scene, it suffers quite a bit in theway of being a toy set. While the actual Dementors themselves could be repurposed as tiny Darth Vader's or something, the trees are just awful. As veteran with Legos, I always end up despising the left over leaves from sets as I never know what to do with them. There's never enough to make a nice looking tree, and they bend and fall apart so easily I tend to just leave them to rot at the bottom of the bucket where they belong.

@BananoFarmer: I really like the super tiny minifigures, the rest isn't so impressive though IMO. But, just for those minifigures, I'd be happy to receive this one. 7/10

009.jpgWhy so Sirius 8/10 Of the Marauders, Sirius is my second favorite. I Also appreciate the brighter color scheme for him, as usually Sirius is depicted with such dark tones.
00I.jpgI'm gonna mark it a bit lower for the plaque 8/10 While I think it's cute, I actually have had so many of these Azkaban plaques. Sirius is in Azkaban for one book, every set he's in they give him one of these. So bored with them at this point, lol. Also, I have a personal bias. My favorite lego figure of Sirius is actually a flat picture square with his face in a fit pit. Too hard to beat that, lol.

@BananoFarmer: Looks pretty good, I like the near little ticket he's got, but nothing much to say. 5/10

010.jpgehem HAHrrrrreeh PoTtEr?!?! DiD u PUt uR NamE iN tHe GArhBLeT oF fIRrrrUH?!!!!!??? 10/10 Just gonna go ahead and rank this as perfect. The little piece of paper and the blue fire. What more can be asked for?!
00J.jpgKind of a boring build tho, actually 7/10 Kind of bland, and the only pieces I hate more than trees, is random fire. Boo.

@BananoFarmer: Those fire pieces are nice, and as a plus you can put them in the hand of a minifigure to simulate a sick plasma sword. Other than that, idk, not as creative or unique as others. 4/10

011.jpgI wasn't quite sure what this was meant to be for a bit 5/10 I believe it's the Tri-Wizard Cup, but man. It's got just too much going on for just being a cup.
00K.jpgThere are these bent connector pieces that I will never use again. 0/10 Getting them to look right was a pain. I hate them, lol.

@BananoFarmer: I knew it was either the gigachad equivalent of a chalice, or some sort of alchemy apparatus. I think I was right. I like the interesting pieces in here, but the finished product is a bit underwhelming. 7/10
