With my husband, David
Sonar scans of my sore shoulder
So often we hear that people suffer from a problem with their shoulders. Yeah! we’re inclined to say. So many people have that. Then we shut it off and move on with our daily lives not really understanding the full impact of that statement.
I have now had cause to, not only think on it but to live it. Ow!!! It began with me suffering a locked-up muscle on the side of my neck which my poor husband was requested to massage nightly for months whenever we watched the TV. Although I felt some relief it just never went away. I thought that I had a ‘frozen shoulder’ and communicated with people who had it, listening to their stories and advice but it eventually seemed to get worse to a point where I went for a sonar scan. Far worse, as it turned out, as without fancy medical words, the sheath running up the arm which encases your nerve had torn and is, as I believe at this point, is non repairable.
Why did I get this! I don’t know what might have brought it on but what I do know is that I am now no longer a golfer, which I had planned to be well into my 90’s at least. It is the worst when you open your cupboard and there are your golf clothes, golf bag and in the washing machine a lose tee. Only a golfer would understand this sense of emptiness. I recall a day on the golf course when I hit the ground, and the pain was so bad that I followed my shot through with the club straight up into the air. Well not only was it sore physically but sore with embarrassment as I am sure the couple, we were playing with, thought that I had had a temper tantrum.
Moving on, that is the reason why the doctor told me that whatever I do never hit the ground or do anything where there is impact. I could putt he said. I, in shock said, so you are telling me that I can play putt-putt.
So, in a nutshell, I also cannot do anything that causes impact like zip lining, tennis etc. etc. I am on a new journey now and it is not all bad. Firstly, I am learning to be a leftie. My left arm is doing great. So, in other words, don’t worry too much if things change radically in your life, just go with the flow and reinvent yourself. I can’t type too much now as it is beginning to ache down my neck and arm but hey, I will not obsess for ages on one thing now. It’s freedom to move on and do something else for a short while.
Shoulders are complex things, and many problems may arise and my only advice here is to go and check it out before you destroy your partners TV viewing.
Playing golf into your 90's - sounds good - but I'm sure someone like you will find something stimulating to do in your 90's
I surely will Lee - you know me well

Hi @eflin-essie it is a pleasure to meet you through this interaction. What you express resembles the description of Painful Shoulder Syndrome (signs and symptoms associated with pain and inflammation in the elements that compose or structure the shoulder, tendons, joint and muscles). Sometimes it generates considerable limitations to movement due to the impossibility or refusal to avoid pain. It is a common condition due to degenerative causes or wear and tear. I suggest that you consider the options of a specialized assessment in the area of physiotherapy, which use local therapies of cold, heat and infiltrations, associated with pharmacological treatments (excellent results have been described).
On the other hand, I welcome with joy your attitude, it is valuable, your willingness to generate changes and nurture yourself doing other activities. We are what we set out to be, all is not lost and you can be happy in many ways. And why not, take up golf again, with certain preventive measures.
Until another time, it has been a pleasure to be here. I hope your shoulder gets better and you recover your health and well-being.
It is so much later since I wrote this and yet my shoulder is still hurting. I have had several Chiropractic visits but no light as yet. I will try to not go down the operation route.
