"retail therapy" as I call it, can be a good thing. I think just going to the mall like you do, and then knowing you might buy something, or you might not, does the trick. My husband and I did some retail therapy when his mom was dying some years ago. We were into model trains at the time and went looking for new cars to add to the model of train we had. We enjoyed the trains a lot and it helped us to forget for just a little while what was going on.
