My name is Elvira Skourtis, I am a concert guitarist, guitar teacher at the Las Tunas School of Art, mother of two beautiful teenagers and much more 😁.
I use the title in the form of a question because of something that happened to me a while ago and I am going to use it as an introduction to this community.
It happens that since last year I have been pursuing a PhD in art sciences. But, when they approved me and I shared the news with a colleague, she told me: How great, Elvira, now you are going to be an empowered woman.
That hurt me, but I didn't say anything to her, to avoid annoyance or argument.
Am I now an empowered woman?
I grew up alone with my grandmother, I studied, I graduated with honors from high school and from the university. I have been a teacher for more than 30 years, and at the same time, I have never stopped playing.
I have played for presidents, I have played in the main halls of this country as a soloist or with guitar orchestras, I have won national competitions. I have a master's degree in Art.
I am a chair, deputy director of the Isaac Nicola guitar orchestra, director of my guitar quartet "Sultasto", I also work as a soloist, I am president of the music branch of UNEAC, advisor for guitar teaching in the Eastern region, I am a national judge in guitar competitions, I organize concert events and, all this, while I study, take care of my husband and raise my two children.
So, now that I enrolled in the doctorate, do I become empowered?
I don't think so.
I have been since I was born and I fight to be happy.

Mi nombre es Elvira Skourtis, soy guitarrista concertista, profesora de guitarra en la Escuela de Arte de Las Tunas, madre de dos hermosos adolescentes y mucho más 😁.
Utilizo el título en forma de pregunta por algo que me sucedió hace un tiempo y voy a usarlo como presentación esta comunidad.
Sucede que desde el año pasado estoy cursando el doctorado en ciencias sobre arte. Pero, cuando me aprobaron y le compartí la noticia a una colega, me dijo: Qué bueno, Elvira, ahora sí vas a ser una mujer empoderada.
Eso me dolió, pero no le dije nada, para evitar una molestia o discusión.
¿Ahora es que soy una mujer empoderada?
Yo que me crié sola con mi abuela, estudié, me gradué con honores de nivel medio y de la universidad. Yo que soy maestra desde hace más de 30 años, y al mismo tiempo, nunca he dejado de tocar.
He tocado para presidentes, he tocado en las principales salas de este país como solista o con orquestas de guitarras, he ganado concursos nacionales. Hice una maestría en Arte.
Soy jefa de cátedra, subdirectora de la orquesta de guitarras Isaac Nicola, directora de mi cuarteto de Guitarras “Sultasto”, trabajo, además, como solista, soy presidenta de la filial de música de la UNEAC, asesora de la enseñanza de la guitarra en la región de Oriente, soy tribunal nacional en concursos de guitarra, organizo eventos de concierto y, todo esto, mientras estudio, atiendo a mi esposo y crío a mis dos hijos.
Entonces, ¿ahora que matriculé el doctorado, es que vengo a ser empoderada?
No lo creo.
Lo soy desde que nací y lucho por ser feliz.
Esa soy yo.
