Turning Leftovers into Flavor: A Savory Shrimp Powder Recipe

in Ladies of Hivelast month

Today, my child received a school assignment to bring a healthy lunch. I started looking for lunch ideas on Pinterest and Instagram, eventually deciding on a shrimp dish. It was simple: just shrimp, carrots, and green onions, finely chopped with an egg, a bit of salt and pepper, then pan-fried until cooked. For fruit, I packed grapes.

After preparing the shrimp, I was left with the heads and shells. I remembered seeing people turn leftover shrimp heads and shells into shrimp powder by dry-roasting them until crispy. This time, I wanted to try something a bit different.

First, I washed and cleaned the shrimp heads and shells thoroughly to remove any dirt, then drained them. For drying, there are several methods, including dry-roasting, baking, or using a dehydrator. I decided to go with the dehydrator, and since I had two trays left, I also added some garlic to dry alongside.

Once everything was completely dried, I ground the shrimp heads and garlic into a fine powder. You can also add mushroom powder from dried mushrooms for extra flavor. The aroma alone was incredibly appetizing. Finally, I added a bit of salt to enhance the taste. And there it was—a savory powder made from leftovers. Enjoy trying it out!

I often just throw them away as waste for composting. With the high price of shrimp in my town trying this can be worth while.

What a practical way of saving money @ernadonsa you are very resourceful and smart. 😊
